Title: A sleepy quitter..
Post by: Veggeh on September 25, 2012, 08:09:00 AM
Day 18 of my quit here. Name is Veggeh, Veg, Veggie...etc...or you can call me Josh. I quit nicotine 18 days ago on my birthday. Man it's been rough. Not because I want a dip real bad. Technically I guess I'm still dipping, but it's Hooch. I'm on my 5th can of Hooch since quitting. Back to what I was saying...lol...it's the side effects that's been rough. See, right before I quit, I decided it was time to get healthy all the way around. A month or a month and a half before quitting, I started P90X. Then, I quit caffeine for a couple weeks. That went so well, I decided to bag this monster (timberwolf long cut wintergreen). Been going good...except I went back to caffeine. Which isn't too bad, unless I drink it in the afternoon or evening. Because my worst side effect....insomnia. I wake after 3 hours sleep and just can't get anymore. Then the crankiness comes into play and my wife wants to strangle me. Speaking of which, I've been married to her for 11 years now, we have 3 beautiful kiddos (2 rambunctious boys, one princess, and one more boy on the way). So I've got many reasons to want to quit. Man...I don't think I've ever been so bad at making paragraphs! It's good to be here! So glad I found this site!

Welcome Vag! Congrats on taking your life back. The worst of the process is behind you and your dedication will determine your success from here on out. If there's no nic, you're quit. Use as much fake stuff as you need to. Take a look at the welcome center tab, post your promise in Dec. '12 and stick to it. Limiting your caffeine intake and exercise will help with the mood swings. I was going to mention the dangers of auto erotica but will let that stand, just quit for today and for you. Shout out if there's anything you need or you've got any questions, I'll pm my number. You got this.

Best choice of your life. Quitting that is.

PM me if ya got questions.

As for the sleep, your brain is re-wiring itself. take naps if you can, exercise before bed to tire yourself out.

And try not to take anything out on your kids or wife. If you feel that angry jump into the live chat and/or bitch it up in a post on here.

It was a good night last night..other than sleeping through my alarm and being late for work. I got 8 hours. Man...that's good stuff right there.

Pretty good honestly. Night sweats were horrid last night, but I'm learning to cope. And since sweat is one of the bodies mechanisms for ridding itself of toxins...them I actually find it therapeutic. Sleeping better though. Looking forward to the weekend when I don't have to worry about my alarm. Oh, and no hooch yet today, even drove to work without something in my mouth. Though I will be pinching the hooch eventually today.

Last night was freaking miserable. Don't even know what the hell happened. Fought with the wife...and I wasn't even craving (I don't think). It was enough to make me want to a little though. I think that pissed me off even more. I mean crap....I just got done doing yoga X....you know how hard it is to keep a guy from mellowing out after yoga. I needed a heavy bag.

Sooooo, the oral fixation...I'm still using herbal stuff on day 21. I'd like to stop spending money on it. Any advice there from those that have used the fake stuff?

Hey - it will just take time, I am on day 89 and still have some fake after opening the tin 2 weeks ago. I use less that the size of a kernal of corn each time. Just do less and less, mix it up with some sugarfree gun and candy.

Hack you are just 3 weeks. There are some here that are still using it regularly after being in the 100's, and some still use the fake as a fall back for whenever the cravings hit them hard.

Remember that the fake is just that and it is no longer poisoning your body. It will come, give it time.

have you tried sunflower seeds? altoids? one of my tricks is to shove 4-5 altoids where i used to put my dip, seems to work if i'm getting a bad craving.

Temptation-

you may want to re-check that as blood pressure should go down in the absence of nicotene which is a stimulant. After approx 60 days quit I went back to the Dr. and my blood pressure that had been in the 160/100 range was 132/84, the best its been in years.

So dont sweat it, relax as you are getting healthier as you go through this one and only quit.

My grandfather-in-law, is the owner. Her Uncle, my supervisor. Her mother, the face and voice of the company. I also work with her 2 cousins...one of which is the daughter of the uncle. Needless to say, I'm not the favorite. (maybe my MIL) I could choke em today.

Deer archery season opened Monday. I'll be hitting the woods Friday, Saturday or Sunday evening. Going to be a good stepping stone as it's been years since I've been in the woods with out longhorn or timberwolf. Betting my smoky mountain peach has a more natural scent than the real stuff.

Besides you SMS, what's your plan?

Do you have other nicotine users going with you? Have you told them you've quit? You gonna carry a cell phone and stay checked in?

I was off hunting last week with my 4 yr. old grandson instead of my Copenhagen. First time I've been hunting nic free in probably 36 yrs! I'm at 186 days and until I read your post I hadn't even thought about my hunting being nic free. I had so much fun with my grandson I never once thought about a dip!

Been there done that last weekend deer hunting with my son. I had a few minor craves and turned those thoughts into a teachable moment. Instead of teaching him by cramming that poison into my cheek I reminded him of my quit and told him I am glad I stopped. Even at 8 years old he knows the dangers and cared enough about dad to try to convince me to stop relentlessly. He was always asking me to quit and he even tried unsuccessfully to convince me give it up for lent. Being the senseless addict who believed the lies of nicotine I ignored my own sons request telling him it was adult stuff and buzz off. What a fool I was, turns out he should be doing the teaching and I should have been listening better.

I ate a lot of MMs when I first went to the woods with dip.

The truth in this is that when you confront and defeat these sorts of craves, your quit gets a magnitude stronger.

You can do this! Keep strong.

Continued bitching from yesterday....past couple days have felt...overly dramatic.

Day 26. Is this who I am without freaking worm dirt? Things have chilled at home, I'm no longer the biggest asshole my wife knows. Which is cool. But I'm freaking miserable at work. Have I been in some sort of nicotine induced fog? Some sort of trip that made me to believe I actually like it here? That I being the only non blood relative here, can put up with the favoritism that I obviously don't receive? Let me give you a big fat fer instance...coworker, in the same position as I, my cousin in law if you will, took last Friday off, after 4 months of overtime. Because he needed a recharge. Sounds great! I'll do the same. They actually give me shit, laugh at my insistence not to be here and said if I wasn't working for family, I would be fired. I'm thinking "ugh, if you weren't family, I'd have quit long before this!" (and I'd have better health insurance) choke them...choke my freaking uncle.....in law.

This insomnia B.S. is getting old. I'm now at day 62 and very seldom do I get even 5 hours of straight sleep. Last night I get home from a meeting an hour away from here. Was about 10:30, got to bed and asleep around 11. Woke up at 2:30 and been awake since.
This is my typical night. Any suggestions?

VedMan,

I am right there with you, I am at day 54 and still have trouble sleeping half the time. My issue is actually falling asleep, I get what feels like anxiety in the evenings and my mind races so that I can't fall asleep. I have tried all sorts of herbal OTC remedies and Unisom, they really didn't work. I went to my doctor, and as much as I hate using it, he prescribed me Klonopin to take on an as needed basis. I really try to limit the use as I don't want to end up dependent another supstance. I just keep telling my self at some point it will be over and I will be able to go back to my normal sleep habits/patterns, sometimes it doesn't feel like I will ever get there. Reading up on this site helps to know that at least there are a few folks that deal with or have dealt the same issue for an extended period during their quit, helps keep your sanity :) I don't know if anything I wrote hear helps in anyway, but know that your definitely not alone, I am working on 3 hours sleep this morning.

No problem! If anything helps someone else it's all good!

So yesterday I started to ride to work in 40 degree weather...blah blah, things didn't pan out, so I put on a different jacket. PISSED ME OFF to find a can in the pocket. PISSED ME OFF. lol. It was the first time I'd worn the coat this season.

My sleep has been getting better. I still wake up more times a night than I'd like, but wake up feeling more rested than before. I was given a scientific explanation for it. Something about nicotine users sleeping heavier. Also given another reason..."sleep is for the weak. When you give up your tobacco, that takes strength. Thus, your gain in strength is followed a lesser need for sleep, you boss." Yup...badass.

So just when my quit seems to be getting "easier"....I decide I need to quit the Afrin nasal spray as well. lol

Good grief, I have slept 5 hours in two nights....and have a sinus infection and bronchitis. But you know what....feel better than when I was controlled by that crap in can!

As someone who doesn't sleep anyway before quitting I have some advice. Go to a health food store (GNC, vitamin shoppe, etc) and get some Natural melatonin. It's apart of my daily supplement routine and it helps greatly. It's not narcotic because your body produces it naturally. Take it about an hour before bed.

I actually have some. But my nose is so ridiculously plugged I can't sleep, even with it. Went to the doc today and got some steroids for the inflammation and some antibiotics for the infection. I think things will start getting better on the sleep front very soon.

I've noticed I become extremely frustrated by those that "can't", or "don't have time" or "will start Monday" (really?! It's Friday!) Then of course they don't start Monday. I have 3 kids with one on the way, worked overtime for 5 months and serve in church twice a week. I quit dipping cold turkey and work out for at last an hour and a half daily. I don't accept excuses anymore.
