I had my first chew about 16 years ago. They were handing out free cans at an event so I grabbed one to check it out. It didn't do much for me at the time so I moved on to other things.
10 years ago I came back to the can when a buddy gave me a dip on a fishing trip. For quite awhile I was able to only dip when fishing, but soon the addiction would have me.
For the past five years I've been steadily increasing in frequency and finally decided enough is enough. I tried to rationalize that I didn't have a problem for a long time, but now the first thing I crave when I wake up is the first dip. I've always been a ninja dipper around most friends and family and even when my wife occasionally catches me she doesn't get upset. What I've started to realize is that no one is going to make me quit except myself. I'm expecting my first child in June and can't imagine not being there for my wife and child because of such a selfish habit.
I'm so glad to have found this site and start my journey to freedom.
Cheers,
LL

Congrats on making this decision...you have come to the right place as its saved many folks just like you. We are all addicts here and that is a realization that can save your life. You will always be an addict but you don't have to feed that addiction. So you need to post roll...that is your promise that you won't use ANY form of nicotine TODAY. Today is the most important. Worry about tomorrow when it comes.

Congrats on becoming a quitter. Here we quit for life, but we do it one day at a time because it is manageable and it keeps it simple. Follow the program and you will succeed. I quit with you today.

Excellent choice man. We all made the same one. Like Grizz said, stick with the program. Post roll every damn day, get to know the folks in your quit group and read, read, read everything on here.

Welcome little dude! You are going to love the taste of freedom. Just embrace that thought for just today and then repeat it again tomorrow. I'm excited for you. Shoot me a PM if you ever need anything.

Welcome and as stated you made the right decision. Read the Welcome Center and get quit. KTC does work if you really want to be a Quitter!

Brothers and Sisters,
I tried my first quit with July and failed. It was me that failed not "we" that failed. I appreciate the support I've already received and look forward to more. Tomorrow (may 14th) will be my official quit date. I look forward to joining y'all on this difficult but fulfilling journey. I will not let August down like I did July - I have figured out my triggers and now know how to avoid them, but will still need your help.
Thanks in advance.

Is this a new intro or a first or what? Seems to me some remedial training will need to be done here. Yes, I'm busting your balls, not because you caved but for your lack of inspiration. show us some quit, not some excuses.

What in the fuck is a tomorrow?

What in the fuck is a tomorrow?
That's weak.
Be real. You are still in love with the nic bitch.
You've been here, you know how this works. When you are ready to be serious, post roll and drink every damn drop of the koolaide.

You "tried" your first quit with July? WTF? This isn't a sampler tray bro. If it isn't to your liking you don't just give up and come back to a different month and "try" it out. This isn't an experiment... It's life and death. Don't be owned by that evil shit anymore. Own. Your. Quit.
Yes... It's not fun but it's the price of freedom and its worth it.
2 things...
1) stick to the original intro you started. You don't get 2
2) you have 3 questions to answer... What happened? Why did it happen? What are you going to do differently this time. Do NOT give us cheezy answers... Dig deep... Be real.

Fair enough everyone, I can take the heat. I quit today and will remain quit. Still not sure if I'm supposed to join a new group for August or move back to July.
As for the questions:
What happened - my other addiction (alcohol) got the best of me and I decided it was a good idea to go grab a dip, I actually didn't remember it until the next morning, which sort of sent me into a downward spiral from there.
Why did it happen - my lack of control while drinking got the best of me.
What will I do different - I'm seeing a counselor now, primarily in response to my drinking and other related life events. I'm now on medication to help balance out my brain chemistry. My wife is on board as a support mechanism (I've tried to keep my habit hidden from her).
Not sure what else you want from me, but that's where I'm at. I'm not back to try again, there will be no trying only succeeding.

Dude I don't know that the fuck "I tried" means, but that is the biggest load of bullshit that I've seen in a long fucking time. There is no try here, there is no "I'll quit again tomorrow" here, if you don't want to fucking quit then don't fucking quit. I'm serious, don't waste your time posting over and over and over and over day 1 and trying to put up some pansy ass apology. You caved, you were a spineless puss who didn't lean on your quit brothers/sisters when you needed them and you caved. I hope you grew a set between the time you decided to cave and the time that you decided you were going to "try" another quit.
Before you do much in the way of roll posting you have some damn questions to answer and I think that we all deserve some real damn answers. I don't want to hear no "feel good" bullshit story about how your goldfish died and you couldn't handle the stress and that dip just jumped right in your lip to make you feel better.
I want to know what the fuck went through that piece of shit between you ears that made you think long enough to get to the gas station, ask the clerk for the nicodik, pay for the nicodik, and start sucking the nicodik that it was a good idea to cave?
Why did you think it was a grand idea to start sucking the nicodik again? I mean were the first 7 days of quit not enough of a challenge the first time around? You thought you would just give it another whirl and see if you could beat your previous high score? Let me tell you, this shit doesn't work that way. Day 1 sucks just as bad the second time you "try" as it did the first time.
What is it that you are going to "promise" us that you are going to do differently this time to make sure that this doesn't happen again? While you are telling us that, tell us why we should believe you since you posted roll, promised to stay quit, and then lied to us by caving. In my little part of the world a man's word is all he has, it's all he is worth and once he tarnishes his word, he is tarnished. You have a shit load of polishing to do in my book to even get a little bit of the shine that was on your word back.
If you want to really post roll, and you really want to quit, then get some fucking digits and start texting/calling people when you are on the edge. I'll be the first person to give you my digits if you PM me. I will be there to talk you through the tough times. There is no more of this "try" bullshit. Please do us all a favor, if you decide that August isn't the best month for you and you cave again, don't tell us how hard you "tried" not to drive to the gas station, how hard you "tried" not to ask the clerk for your favorite brand, how hard you "tried" not to pay for it, even as he/she handed you your favorite brand, and how hard you "tried" not to stick that nicodik right back where you had kicked it out of.
As Yoda would say, "do or do not, there is no try".

Oh fuck no. You are not welcome in July. When you quit for real, that's the group you join!
Man you got it all goin on. The booze did NOT get the best of you. YOU ALLOWED THE BOOZE TO GET THE BEST OF YOU! When you understand that statement completely, then and only then will you START understanding your addiction, until that time you will fail over and over and over again, PERIOD!
Counselor huh? FUCK THAT BULLSHIT! You take your ass to an AA meeting, you get yourself a sponsor, you LIVE the 12 steps. When you do all these things, then come back and join us. MAYBE someday you will understand what being an addict truly means and that you will live with both of these diseases every single day for the rest of your life.

To be successful at quitting dip, I had to quit drinking as well. I'm giving it a 60 day window on the beers so around July 4th I'll be ripe for celebrating. Not sure if you are doing the same but highly recommended. Tends to help you actually keep your word. Welcome to August quit.

Agree with this 100%. Drinking is a big trigger for nearly all of us. If you're serious about your quit, you'd be smart to cut way back on the drinking until you've got some legs under your quit. Otherwise you're going to fall right back into the same trap again.
And while I'm at it... You yourself said that your "other addiction alcohol" got the best of you. I'm no saint so take this for what it's worth, but if you've identified that as an issue, perhaps you should be quitting that one too? We've got an Alcohol Quit Group here topic/1003099/ (http://forum.killthecan.org/topic/1003099/) with some BAD ASS alcohol quitters that can help you.
Post roll... mean it... stick to it. Stop "trying". Fucking do it.

Disagree 100%. Being sober doesn't help you keep your word, being honest does.
If you have a drinking problem, go fucking deal with it somewhere else. This isn't AA, (thank the higher power).
You didn't chew because you were blacked out, you decided that you were blacked out enough to use it as an excuse to be weak.
If you were a man, you would just admit that you weren't ready to be quit yet.
Are you now?

Not sure why you kinda took a shit all over Chewie's advice Lipp. In this situation your quite wrong, alcohol affects our judgement and highly encouraged to be cautious when drinking early on in your quit. I personally do not understand the mindset of quitters that feel the need to get shitfaced and endanger their quit but to say alcohol itself isn't a danger is not true. It may still be a punk ass excuse to blow your quit, but many a cave can be attributed to an irresponsible bender.
Your statement to "go fucking deal with it somewhere else" ? As Chewie stated there is an alcohol quit and slow down groups here on the site. I'm all for taking the hard line and letting a caver know that excuses don't fly, but your just being an asshole in my opinion and not very helpful. Chewie's post was helpful and at the same time says, sack up and do it.

Riiight. Nobody's ever done anything dumb under the influence of alcohol. It doesn't impare your decision making at all.
Fat chicks wouldn't get laid if not for alcohol. Ever heard of the term, "beer goggles"? He'll I once took a dump in a shoebox because I was wasted.
If you don't think staying sober will help you keep your word, especially until you get your quit bearings, then you're not only a Jack Pole, then you've never read any of the cave stories on this site. A high percentage of them involve alcohol.
Does that make it ok? Absolutely not, but let's use some common sense here.
And my God, if my man's got an alcohol problem, and there are means on ktc to help, why not check them out?
I think you were wearing your dunce cap, when you came up with this retort, Lipi.

Yeah that post got away from me a bit. You know why? I was wasted. Somehow I got hammered and didn't cave.
I get sick of seeing people use alcohol as an excuse to cave. It is especially offensive and irritating to me when I have had a few too many drinks.
Somehow people manage to drink without making bad decisions like robbing a bank while they are wasted. How do they do that? Their judgement has been compromised! Seems like we would all be out robbing banks and murdering people while we are wasted, right? Cause we are powerless over our decision making process when we are wasted.
Anyway, didn't mean to offend chewie, just expressed myself poorly.
Dudes who cave after drinking are pussies.
Dudes who think they are alcoholics should go to AA.
None of my business though, I won't be mingling much anymore.

What happened - my other addiction (alcohol) got the best of me and I decided it was a good idea to go grab a dip, I actually didn't remember it until the next morning, which sort of sent me into a downward spiral from there.
Fucking do it.
chewie
Disagree 100%. Being sober doesn't help you keep your word, being honest does.
If you have a drinking problem, go fucking deal with it somewhere else. This isn't AA, (thank the higher power).
You didn't chew because you were blacked out, you decided that you were blacked out enough to use it as an excuse to be weak.
If you were a man, you would just admit that you weren't ready to be quit yet.
Are you now?

Robbing banks and killing people vs popping in a dip. Pretty big stretch, don't ya think?
You must be a spokesman for alcohol, you're very defensive of it. If I remember correctly, early in your quit, some people advised you to watch your alcohol intake and you went ape shit then, too.
It's just a suggestion for crying out loud, and another tool some (obviously not you), might find helpful.
Exercise, try fake, chew seeds, chew gum, suck on atomic fire balls, watch the alcohol....DING DING DING, lippo goes bananas.
I don't get it. Its just a suggestion.
Mexican food used to make me want to chew like a mother fucker. So when I first quit...I stayed away from it for awhile, because I thought it would improve my odds. Seemed like a smart move to me at the time...
Whatever you got to do to get your quit going, do it, littlebowski. Obviously your first "attempt" blew ass. Don't be doosh and make the same mistakes, twice.

KTC Community - One of our own from August quit group was in a single car crash in Oregon. Littlelebowski was airlifted to a nearby hospital and has been in a coma since last Wed. LL and his wife had their first kid 12 days prior. Lots of upheaval and uncertainty in their world and lots of unknown costs. If you would like to contribute to John and Annie, please see paypal instructions below. Collectively our $5, $10, whatever amount you contribute will go a long way. Conbud has already printed the vortex of well wishes and sent to his home address with a KTC Quit On shirt.
LL Current status: John is doing well. They turned down his sedation today to try and wake him up. Apparently it can take a while for the drugs to clear his system so he hasn't woken up yet. Hopefully tomorrow. The last CT of his head looked really good. His lungs are still very bruised so he will not be off the ventilator as soon as we had originally thought. But the lungs will heal, it just takes time. Hope that helps. Thanks again to the KTC community for all the support.
Paypal Instructions to donate:
Go to Paypal (https://www.paypal.com/webapps/mpp/make-online-payments).
1. Type the following for Annie's email: baumannas@gmail.com (http://mailto:baumannas@gmail.com)
2. Type the amount to donate, then click CONTINUE.
3. Complete the information for billing, contact info, and password. You need to have/create a PayPal account, but you can either delete or not use it in the future, then select the AGREE AND SETUP ACCOUNT button.
4. You will then be on the review page where you can add a special note at the bottom (optional). Once reviewed, click the SEND MONEY button.
Let's do what we can to keep this one at the top of the intros, thanks.

LL's wife sent an update today...
Hi Z.. Quick update for you [LL] is doing well. No real changes since the last update. He is still sedated waiting for lungs to heal enough so he can get off the ventilator. Could take up to 2 weeks. So we're getting a good lesson in patience.
Please post a big thank you from us to the KTC family. Their support has been overwhelming and is much appreciated.
I will continue to to send updates as I have them.
I'm proud to be part of this group.

KTC Community - Thanks for participating and blowing littlelebowski's wife away. The strength of the site is brotherhood and thankfully sisterhood as well. We've seen that questioned over the past few days so let's focus on the important stuff. We're 55% of the way to paying his deductible. Our August group and his initial July group would really like to see that happen. If times are good for you now, take a couple of minutes and follow the paypal instructions above. Good kharma and vibes paying it forward and taking care of a brother in need. See below, he looks to be taking baby steps in his healing journey.
6/27 3 PM PT update from LL's wife Annie
That is very generous. I think John's deductible is about $500. That would be fantastic if the guys would like to make that their goal. We are very grateful for everyone's support. I just got home from the hospital. John's surgery today went very well. They placed a tracheotomy tube and a feeding tube this morning. They have turned down his sedation hand he has started to blink his eyes and respond to voices. It may take a few days for the sedation to fully wear off but we were happy to see him start responding today. I will continue to keep you posted on his progress.
Thanks,
Annie

Thanks,
Annie
That's awesome! Thanks for the update
Keep this going guys. Just sent a small donation, please consider doing the same!
Just posted this to the June Facebook page, The Main KTC Facebook page, and shared it to my wall hoping some of my friends will contribute as well...

John is doing very well. He has made a lot of progress over the past few days. He is moving his arms and legs, squeezing hands and nodding to answer questions. He is unable to talk right now with the tracheotomy. His lungs are still very bruised which is making it hard for him to get off of the ventilator. Because of this he is being transferred to a specialty hospital in Portland, OR (about 3 hours from our home). This facility specializes in pulmonary rehab so it is the best place for him to be to speed up his recovery. We will be leaving later this week to join him in Portland.
-
KTC Community - One of our own from August quit group was in a single car crash in Oregon.

KTC : We remain at 70% attainment. Enjoy the 4th, freedom isn't free.
Update from Annie: John (little lebowski) made it to Portland and is all settled in his new room. He continues to do well. He is off all of the sedation meds and just on pain meds as needed. He appears a lot clearer now that all of that is out of his system. He started PT and OT today. Lungs continue to heal but he is doing well on the ventilator.
I did get the shirt that Conbud sent. I think it's great! As soon as we get unpacked I plan to bring it up to show him. I know he will love it.
The last time I checked KTC had donated $350! It is much appreciated. Thank you all again for your support. That's the update for now and I'll continue to keep you posted.

KTC Community - It's a long road ahead for littlelebowski (John). I didn't post the link to the newspaper article covering the accident since this is an anonymous forum and felt it was not appropriate to share his name. John was out fishing solo with his Australian shepherd dogs. His truck was hauling a boat and likely over corrected in a turn and rolled numerous times. Air bags did not deploy. LL was medi-vaced to a hospital and has been there 3 weeks recovering. August will continue to post for him daily knowing that he is in the hospital and is quit (thanks Bass). One of his dogs was found at the scene and received treatment at a vet hospital. The 2nd was lost but was found later totally unhurt obviously possessing massive spidey skills. How does a dog get thrown from a car and land perfectly with no injuries??
We are 80% complete to hitting the goal. Thanks to all from July and August for your support and consideration. Prayers are welcome. Hope everyone had an awesome holiday weekend.
Update from Annie: Hope you had a good 4th of July weekend. John continues to do well. He has been much more alert the past few days. His range of motion for his arms and legs is much better too. He has started working with speech therapy. He is mouthing words when asked questions and is able to answer them appropriately. He is not able to swallow yet so they started working on that today too.
John's lungs continue to improve. It is a 19 step program to ween him completely off the ventilator. They are planning to start step 1 tomorrow. Average time to complete the program is 30 days. So I will continue to keep you posted on his progress. KTC members have donated $400! Thank you so much for all the support.

Good stuff, D4M!
Thanks Done ... nice to hear John is doing better (and that his dogs are also OK). Link to Paypal works, just sent them a little bit of help and support. I quit with all of you today!
Still sending prayers. That's amazing. Speedy recovery.
What's the goal we are trying to hit?
-
KTC Community - One of our own from August quit group was in a single car crash in Oregon.

KTC Community: Update of LL below from Annie. We are 70% of the way towards hitting the goal. Thanks to all.
Update:
John is doing very well. He has made a lot of progress over the past few days. He is moving his arms and legs, squeezing hands and nodding to answer questions. He is unable to talk right now with the tracheotomy. His lungs are still very bruised which is making it hard for him to get off of the ventilator. Because of this he is being transferred to a specialty hospital in Portland, OR (about 3 hours from our home). This facility specializes in pulmonary rehab so it is the best place for him to be to speed up his recovery. We will be leaving later this week to join him in Portland.
GREAT NEWS! Let's get the other 30% of this goal KTC... If we can beat nicotine we can crush this goal as well!
KTC : We remain at 70% attainment. Enjoy the 4th, freedom isn't free.

The goal was his insurance deductible of $500, last time I heard we were at around $400.

Fresh 7/10 update:
Hi Joe -
At least you are all internet weirdo strangers with good hearts. ;)
John continues to make progress. He started step 2 of 19 this morning. Not sure exactly what that means or entails but we're one step closer! He is interacting more with friends and family and his personality is coming through more and more each day. Yesterday was the first day that he was able to hold our 6 week old daughter all on his own. That was pretty exciting for all of us to see. So the journey continues...we still have a ways to go but we are thankful for all the progress so far. And we are especially thankful for everyone's support.
Thanks again and I will continue to keep you posted.
Annie

Keep battling LL! I don't post much but I've been tracking your progress and praying for you. Be glad for when you get back up to full speed, and I know you're beyond ready to be 100%.
Quit on sir!

Stopped in for an update. Glad to see so much progress since I last checked in John. You're in my thoughts and prayers. So happy you were finally able to hold your new child! Keep fighting, can't wait to see you back here!

7/15 update... The KTC community is AWESOME!
Hi Joe -
Hope you all had a great weekend.
Things are going well in Portland. John is doing great. He is on step 11 of 19 today for weaning off the vent. He will start on step 12 and possibly 13 tomorrow. He has been doing well with PT/OT and speech therapy. He is now able to have ice chips which he is very excited about.
I'm very happy and grateful to report that KTC members have donated $550! John started talking a little bit this past week. He asked me to pass on a big thank you to everyone for the thoughts, prayers, gifts, cards and generous donations.
Thanks again for everything. I will continue to keep you updated.

I've been trolling around the site today looking for something uplifting, or some new quitter who is drinking the Kool-Aid, and it's been one of those days where most intro posts have been negative...until this! Great news! Totally made my day. Be strong!

Update from Annie:
Hi Joe -
Sorry it's been a while since my last update. Things are moving along here so I haven't had much time...which is good. ;)
John is doing great. He has been off the ventilator for a few days now and doing well. They moved the ventilator out of his room this morning and capped off his trach. He is still on a little supplemental oxygen but not much. This starts a 5 day trial to make sure he can tolerate the trach being closed. If the next few days go well they will take the trach out for good.
John will be discharged to an inpatient physical therapy rehab center from here. We're not sure if he will be staying in Portland for this or heading back home to Bend.
John has started using his iPad and was on the KTC site yesterday. Not sure if he has posted anything yet but I'm sure he will soon.
Thank you all again for the prayers, well wishes and extremely generous donations. It warms my heart to know that so many people care.
Thanks,
Annie.

Hey all,
Here's a brief update on my condition. First of all I'd like to thank everyone for your support during this trying time. This was huge for my wife as she dealt with this to see everyone come together. As I've come to and my memory improves this has been a great source of happiness for me too. So thanks again for everything - I'm even sporting my KTC shirt today, thanks! (Can't figure out how to post a pic right now though)
I was discharged from the long term care facility on July 28 and was able to be moved to a short term rehabilitation facility in my hometown of Bend, OR. I was successfully weaned off the ventilator and the tracheostomy tube was removed successfully too . I've been extremely lucky and things have progressed rapidly during recovery so I officially moved home on Saturday August 2. There are still some potential effects of brain damage from the accident, but I can walk, know what's going on and am home with my family so no complaints here.
This has been a life altering experience that I couldn't have gotten through without your help. To say the least, this has helped put my quit in a different perspective and I hope all of you can gain something from it too. I feel like I got a new lease on life by starting to break the chains of nic addiction (I know this is an ongoing fight) and being able to come through this relatively unscathed.
Cheers
Littlelebowski / John

Talk about some sobering perspective. Under the circumstances, it sounds like things could have been much, much worse. Glad to hear you're solidly on the road to recovery. I definitely quit with you today.

So great to hear LL! Proud to quit with you and the August Brass Ballers.

Quit with LL all day long!

Thanks for all of your continued support. It has made recovery and keeping quit that much easier.
Unfortunately D4, the therapists told Annie all of those activities would be good for me to do...so I've been getting more chore assignments :(
A brief update - I've been at home for two weeks now and things continue to progress well. Strength is coming back (luckily I've always been weak) and I will look to return to work in the near future. There doesn't appear to be significant lasting effects from whacking my head but only time will tell.
After reading some good discussions by the August text group and visiting my Dr., I realized signing on for 200 days was more important than ever. I may feel quit now, but I still haven't had to face a lot of my triggers and am now realizing what responsibilities exist for me in the real world. As I get towards full recovery, the old triggers will still be there and I'll probably need help then to keep on the right track.
Hope everyone is having a good weekend.
Cheers,
LL/John

Well John, one thing positive from whacking your head is the foresight to sign up for the 200 days. You're spot on with that assessment! I know you're crowding 100 ... Post-HOF it's a fact that quitters start to get bored, start to slip away. Post every day, interact ... and reach out to the newbs and offer a hand. You've got an awful lot of strength to offer others bro. Glad to hear you're doing better LL, keep it up brother. Hope your weekend was great as well!

Nice work LL!

LL - Glad you are alive, and still quit. The therapist comment re Annie and the "chore" assignments makes me think life is better than you think.
Not sure why but an old Missy Elliott lyric is ringing. Am I on the right track??
Is it worth it, let me work it, I put my thing down, flip it and reverse it

I think you hit it on the head D4, life is pretty dang good. Being home with the family was my biggest step and even the chores feel pretty good and each week I can do a little more. I never bought I'd look forward to doing the dishes, but I can do them now so that's a big step.
Cheers
