Title: It's time
Post by: nybowhunter21 on January 03, 2018, 12:58:00 PM
My quick story: I've been chewing for 30 years now. I've never really attempted to quit. I made the decision at 11:59 and 59 seconds on New Years Eve as the ball was dropping and I was spitting out my last dip (figured as good as time as any). I'd rather be around as long as possible for my wife, family and friends as I can be. Also, save a small fortune with not buying 2 tins a day. So I've been doing some reading and I know it's a long tough road. Only 3 days into it and it is kind of brutal. The mind is an amazing thing. So far so good though other than my mouth being tore up from sunflower seeds.
I could be wrong, but I don't believe my habit was so much a NEED for the nicotine. I think it was more of an association thing. In truck =dip, at computer = dip, hunting = dip, fishing= dip, etc... Now I am just trying to replace the fixation with an alternative (seeds). I've touched myself on the butt the last 3 days reaching for my tin than I have my entire life. Anyway, glad I stumbled upon this site. I'm sure I'll need some boosting along the way and eventually hope to help others.

Great decision to quit, it could save your life. I have a similar history to yours and can relate to everything your wrote. I am 60 days quit today and can tell you that it is going to be rough going for a while. Make up your mind to quit each day no matter what and stick with it. The key will be to post roll in the April quit group and keep your promise to remain nicotine free each day. What helped me early on was reading as much as I could on this site and finding alternatives to stick in my mouth such as hard candy, tooth picks, and fake to get through the cravings. Follow the advice on this site and you will have the tools and knowledge to stay quit. You can do this if you want this!

Welcome.

The power of this site is the accountability that you find when you post roll. Posting roll is the backbone of this site, and is the cost of admission to this otherwise free resource.

Here (http://forum.killthecan.org/topic/30424041/84/#new) is a link to your April '18 quit group, and here (http://forum.killthecan.org/topic/1003072/1/#new) are instructions on posting roll, you'll also find instructions at the top of the April quit group page.

One important point - dipping/chewing/nicotine is not a habit. It is an addiction, a very powerful addiction. Don't underestimate your body's desire to keep the addiction going. At some point, after the fog of quitting has lifted, I would bet you'll be hit smack in the middle of your face with a very strong crave.

That's where posting your promise on roll comes in. After you've made your promise, if you are a man of your word, nicotine is off the table for the rest of the day.

It may sound silly, making a promise to a bunch of internet strangers, but after a while, if you are active with the site, and jump in with both feet, you will find that there are only a few things in your life more important than making and keeping your promise to your brothers (and sisters) in quit.

It was said previously but bears repeating, dipping was not a habit of association. It was and always will be an addiction. Do not minimize the fact that, until recently, you were addicted to it for 30 years. That is not a habit, that my friend, is the mind fuck of an addict trying to minimize the hold nicotine had on them. We were all there at one time trying to rationalize, minimize, explain away, etc. Your quit will absolutely fail if you continue in that mindset.

The hot tub story was good, but ask about the Sauna and keys in the mailbox.
