Title: My introduction
Post by: Other Life on November 08, 2014, 08:03:00 PM
Hi all, first time I have ever reached out for help with quitting tobacco products. It started out with smoking while drinking when I was 18. Then, just on the weekends, then, if I felt stressed. My wife, (girlfriend at the time), said that she would not be with a smoker, so I quit. To replace that, I started chewing. I have quit multiple times and some extended periods of time. I am almost 34 years old now. I have four beautiful daughters,a great wife, and a blessed life. My nicotine addiction is my other life that I share with no one. I feel horrible that I keep this from my wife. Sad to say, but that's not why I want to quit. If I was going to quit for her, I would have done it a long time ago. I've done this long enough. It's not fun. I can't quit anytime I want to. I am an addict and I need help to do this.
Thanks

Good stuff dude! You have found a life boat here at KTC. It will change your life! Take alook at the Welcome Center thread. Read through those posts. They are short and will explain a little about how KTC will work for you.

I dipped for 23 years, and I'm quit for 144 days now. Was it hard getting started? Oh yes, but I had some motivation outside of just wanting to quit. Honestly though, this site, and my quit group made the whole beginning part much more manageable. I'm never going to be completely cured of this addiction, but I know that there is support here, and they have my back and I have there's. So, you want success? Follow this:

1. Post roll every day without fail. Do it first thing, and do it every day. It is the most important part of KTC, and you must use this tool. You have to ask yourself is coming here everyday for like 2 minutes going to be something you can commit too? I can tell you that there are those that stopped posting roll after having quit for 500 days, and they are right back to the poison. Can you commit to such a simple task? Don't have internet access? See rule 2

2. Get some digits of quitters in your group. I suggest the person above and the person below you in your quit group spreadsheet. Just pm them. It's very important. Out drinking a few with some buds watching the game, and you decide you'd like to sling just one in, but you know you shouldn't. Call or text them. They will talk you down, and you will do the same for them.

You said you have quit several times only to cave. That can happen here. There are dudes who have quit for 500 days, and then caved. Why? Because they stopped following the program. If you don't think you can spare 2 minutes a day to post roll, and then get some digits of other quit brothers, then I advise you to not waste your time here, but if you want to quit, and you can follow the program you will be quit for the rest of you life. Good luck my friend, and I look forward to seeing you in the HOF!!

You posted roll! Believe me when I tell you that is a huge step. Do that every morning when you wake up and you will be amazed how the days will add up. The best advice I can give you is to remember you are an addict at all times. Nicotine is more addictive than cocaine. Just like any other junkie, falling off the wagon can lead to years or decades of more abuse and possibly your death. Thinking you can have a dip and then start quitting again is addict talk. On e you are in, stay in, take back control of your life. Good luck.

Man, that handle really hits home. "Other life"...find me one person on this website that didn't feel like we were leading double lives, ninja dipping in one life and pretending we had everything under control in the other.

Solid intro and glad to see you got your name on roll call. That's your promise and if this quit means as much to you as you imply then keep posting roll and keep that promise. It's time to realize you never really ever "quit" in the past. You merely stopped. Now is your chance to prove to yourself that you CAN quit and you WILL quit. Post roll and keep that promise.

Thanks a lot guys. I feel really weak going into this. Seeing how committed you are and reading your stories gives me hope to overcome this. Thanks again.

You've had some bad ass quitters reach out man... The guys that replied are hard core. But you know what? On day 1 they felt just like you do right now. Scared. Tired. Weak. Hopeless.

It gets better. The freedom that you are taking back feels indescribable. My wife and I went to a really nice restaurant for dinner last night. A couple that could have been us walked in and sat at the table next to us. Dressed really well, but I saw the little ring in his front pocket. 45 minutes in, he told his wife he had a call to make. Then he went outside. Yeah, right....

No more making excuses, lying, hiding in the shower, late night gas station runs, worrying about anyone finding a hidden can. And no more worrying if this next trip to the dentist will be "the one." We all start the same way, but one day at a time, by posting roll and being a man of integrity, you will succeed.

If I can help let me know - my number will be in your inbox.

Congrats Other Life for taking that first step! I was a ninja dipper myself for 20 years and have quit for only 17 days, but these guys are right, the the sense of freedom is amazing!!
It is SO worth it...you can do this!! If you need to talk to someone going through it right now, let me know.

One Day at a Time (ODAAT) and soon you won't feel weak and scared, you'll be kicking the nic bitch to the curb every day. Every single one of us was where you are today, and rememeber the day 1-3 feeling. I never want to go back there and feel that bad, so embrace the SUCK today, and soon it will be over.

One day at a time you are taking your life back.

One little suggestion... I suspect you are having some struggles right now. Nothing a man of his word can't beat... But it will help you to log those challenges in your intro. Not only will the anti nic Calvary jump in to help you beat the challenges... You will have a record of your accomplishments. Many of us consider the daily victory against this drug to be one of our biggest life accomplishments - so keep a history to look back on.

You are killing it! If we can help let us know!!

So many on here can relate to your story man. The best part about your decision is that I already believe you are a better man today than you were four days ago. You are quit. Keep post roll everyday (nice job so far) and remember the suck. Your wife and daughters will appreciate it but just as important, you will appreciate being free from the chains of an unnecessary addiction.

Man, you guys are great! It's nice to have people that can relate. The quit is going ok. I'm just worried about the future. I'm worried about deer camp, the next fishing trip, working in my shop. It's really teaching me one day at a time. I have to get it through my noggin that it is NEVER ok to use tobacco again. Just have to keep on keepin on, one day at a time. You guys hang in there as well. Tx guys!

2 out of the last 3 posts of quit gospel (3 very close quit brothers of mine) just told you to worry about one thing. Today. Say it with me, "ONE DAY AT A TIME" there is no need to worry about the future or fishing trips, or deer camp. Just today. Every day brings a new challenge, and there is only one goal. Quit for that day. You can't get to day 2 unless you quit on day 1. The same will hold true as long as you quit. I'm coming up on a year, but I can't worry about that because I won't get there unless I succeed for today. That is your job...that is my job....and that is all of our jobs. We all have the same job and that's why we all promise to quit together (for ourselves and with each other) ONE DAY AT A TIME.

Lots of hunters on this site....lots of deer camps spent quitting on this site. It can be done.....ultimately every quitter had 6 to 12 things they never did without a dip in. So for you it's hunting, fishing, and working. Just like everyone else you are going to learn to do these things without dip. Do you really think hunting and fishing aren't going to be fun just because you won't have a weed in your mouth? One day at a time. You got this.

These guys know what they are talking about. One day at a time they are living freedom.

I've read almost every intro post on this site for almost 2 years. I have yet to see soneone post "deer hunting sucked without nicotine." I have seen a lot of "man I was sure worried about hunting without dip but had a great time." One of my closest contacts was so freaked out about his first hunt that he fucked up our roll call ridiculously the day of his first hunt. He had a great time.

Remember... It is daunting to think of brushing your teeth every day for the rest of your life. Just brush today. Don't worry about toothpaste in the future!

Day 20 today. Haven't been sleeping well last couple nights. Last night I had a dream that a buddy of mine was getting a dip and I was telling him that I quit. Next thing I knew, I had a dip in and I swear I felt the buzz coming on. When I realized I had a dip in, I ran to the bathroom to spit it out. I was so pissed. I actually woke up and I had to make sure it was just a dream. Very weird! That ever happen to anyone? Vivid dreams?

Perfect choice for a screen name. Dipping for me was also another life. My wife knew or suspected I may have dipped from time to time, but I mostly kept it secret. This quit is also secret--which is another reason why this community is so beneficial.

Yesterday and today I have been hunting with a son (we have odd traditions), and it's not so bad. Not as bad as the first few days of the quit! The fake mint herb dip helps a great deal.

I also had that first dip dream last night. I get the impression it is a common experience. And one more thing--I have not slept as well. This is unexpected because I thought I would get better sleep without the nicotine. I think our bodies have a lot of re-balancing work to do.

Stay strong. My quit date is Nov 19. Feel free to message.

Why don't you come clean with your wife? Many of us here found that the honesty of opening up to our wives was beneficial.

Thanks guys. I did come clean with my wife about 2 weeks ago. She was hurt and I can tell that it still makes her upset sometimes. It was a huge load off my chest. She is supportive to me. She doesnt really know what to say cause its hard for her to relate to the feelings I'm having. She read the spousal support info from here and she said it helped her understand. I feel horrible about lying to her for years, but, we have a clean slate and a I have a whole new level of respect and love for her.

I wish I could say this quit was getting easier for me, but I feel like since day 14, I've been anxious, short-fused, and kinda depressed at times. Havent been sleeping the best, and my energy feels low. I dont mean to sound like a pansie, but for me, it seems like things are getting harder, not easier. I'm not gonna cave, just venting frustrations

Dear OL:

I will get with you later via PM, but here is a quick reply before I hit the road. I am beginning to understand why it's a 100 day HOF, and not a 10 day. These experiences seem to be part of the body finding a new balance. Keep it up... Based on what I read, it does get better.

As an example, last night I felt horrible. I felt nauseated, I felt like throwing up, and I could not sleep again. I have not had a good night of sleep since I quit.

I have noticed that exercising feels great, and I am energized and I feel pretty good for a long time afterwards.
