Not really sure how to work this thing but I'm sure i'll figure it out. I'm 27 years-old and have been chewing a can of cope a day for about 3 years now. Feb 1, 2016 I decided that I NEEDED to quit. I quit cold turkey. I've chomped through packs of gum and atomic fireballs. I haven't had one thought of chewing again and honestly, I don't think I ever will. The one thing that did it for me was back in middle school they always showed us pictures of people with half a jaw and that never really did anything for me. Well I finally pictured myself with half a jaw and my goodness. Life changing. The only thing that i've noticed is changes with my mouth. I was getting sick (turned out to be a 3 week sinus infection) where my throat was hurting and felt like I was trying to swallow a cinder block. When I went to the doctor and I let them know about the chewing they said my mouth was fine, nothing to worry about. A week later, I went back to the doctor (different doctor) on unrelated news. Again, letting them know about the chewing and again "nothing to worry about". I also made a dentist appointment, first time since I started chewing. Teeth looked fine, again "nothing to worry about". Well next day, roughly 5/6 days ago, I noticed a "cold sore" it looks/felt like I bit my cheek. I've been following this site for awhile and doing some research and things point all around to different things. My cheek doesn't hurt or anything, it's almost like an annoyance. Been thinking about this like crazy. My tongue feels like it's been dipped in HOT coffee. I know my mouth is going through changes and everything. But has anyone else experienced these things? I feel like I should be able to trust 2 doctors and a dentist especially since I told them I quit chewing prior to the appointment and told them how nervous I've been. Either way I'm glad I quit and glad there's a place like this to share stories and experiences. GOOD LUCK EVERYONE!

welcome brother. first off get into quit groups and look for may 2016. that's your group. post in there. you will find directions in the header. second thing...drop the over confidence in your quit. an addiction is what you have and those just don't go away. what you need is support. it's why you are here. it's why we are all here. look around. check out the site but MOST important of all....post roll in your group. toMorrow...the next day...day after that....
as for the mouth...I am no doctor but I am a Quitter after 22 years and my mouth went through some weird shit post quit. what I learned was it was healing itself after having daily dosages of poison. stay on top of it with the docs/dentist as needed.
I'd say good luck but you don't need it....you just need determination and accountability. I quit with you today!

I'm a quitter after 25 years. I'm on day 35 of my quit. I've got weird shit going on in my mouth where I held my dip too. I went to the dentist last week. He said that my mouth is healing itself. He also said that nicotine had been covering up soreness that had been there for years.

Congrats on a great choice, Hanzen. You've gotten great advice from other bad ass quitters. Not much to add. Going to docs and dentist is great. But there is a danger...some folks think that a the "all clear" is permission to keep on rolling the dice. You know that is bullshit. But addicts will tell themselves anything to have just one more.
Post roll, stay strong and live free.

Yes, sores and strange pains and soreness in the mouth, jaw, and throat is normal...or at least it was for me. My body and mind did all kinds of weird things during the first couple months of my quit - not days, not weeks, but months. After a while, and after going to the dentist and the doctor, a couple of times, with panic attacks that I thought were heart attacks, I finally just let my body and mind do their thing and stopped freaking out about every little tingle down my arm or foot going numb and similarly bizarre things like that.
Stay strong and you'll get through this.
Atomic fireballs, huh? I used to love those on long road trips (when I wasn't dipping Skoal). I haven't had one or even seen one in many years. I used to see them in convenience stores in the candy aisle, but I haven't been in a convenience store in ages, either. Quitting tobacco eliminated the need to enter those places, I guess. I'll have to find some!
