My slide into addition runs over several decades. Like many I went through periods where I dabbled in an occasional dip and either used it or did not for extended periods. I will say that I became a regular user in 1998 and a heavy user by 2005. By heavy I mean about a can a week which is about all I could manage to get up to.
Again like many I am quitting for all the reasons everyone else has already said. To be short it is a dangerous and embarrassing habit and I am concerned about carcinogenic effects as well as the effects on the vascular system.
Also like many others I have tried in the past unsuccessfully to quit. This will be my 4th attempt in the last 5 years.
I took my last dip at 5PM August 3, 2009. So I guess I am calling today “Day One”. One hundred days right? I made it as far as 30 once before I decided that I was a miserable SOB to everyone in my life without it so made the poor decision to further risk my health so that I would not be so mean to everyone. Amazing that it only takes a day to be just as addicted as you ever were before and now I have to climb the hill again.
I think I will stick it out this time and do it with a smile on my face this time.
Congrats on an awesome decision! Damn glad to have you...
One word of warning - 100 days isn't the magical "I'm cured" date. It's a HUGE milestone that we shoot for but I don't want you to think that you'll be all "better" once you hit the hall. There's still a lot of heavy lifting to be done post-HOF.
That said, stick with us and we will get you there. Don't worry about "forever" - it's too big. Hell, don't even worry about the Hall. Worry about today. We'll deal with tomorrow when we get there.
chewie - 1,108 days clean and still working ;)
