You may have addictive personality traits, but you were never addicted to nicotine until you ingested it.
I'd have to agree. You have the possibility of being born with a dependence if your mother used nicotine while she was pregnant. However, hospitals ween children off of whatever drug/substance they are dependent on in the first few days after they are born. I agree that you're not addicted until you ingest nicotine for yourself after that point.

Addiction is a mental battle. That being said, if you were born addicted, you would have to remember that addiction from the time you were born. I'm fairly certain none of us have memories from our birth.

Just my two cents. I think some of us are born addicts because of DNA, not because our Mom smoked while we are in the womb.

I imagine a lot of addicts' moms smoked while they were in the womb...because they were addicts also. They passed the trait along via the DNA double helix...not through the umbilical cord.
I think it's simply undeniable that a mother who smokes or ingests nicotine in any form during pregnancy is going to pass that nicotine through the bloodstream, on to the unborn child. In turn making the unborn child physically dependent on nicotine. When the child is born he/she will naturally go through physical withdrawals similar to what we all went through as adults.

Not condemning the smoking mothers. Just think it's a plain and simple fact. And it shouldn't be denied. Also, not making excuses for my or our own addict behavior.

So I do think some of us could possibly be born addicts because our mother's smoked while pregnant. Seems logical.

But you raise a whole separate issue with your statement regarding the double helix: Is there a genetic trait for addiction? Honestly, I don't know. And I haven't researched it yet.

Anyway, it can't be a bad thing to learn as much as possible about nicotine addiction.

Hey all...Dunwit here sliding thru the 70's.   My March Iron Men know my name...... just another 100 percent quitter.   Anyway I had a thought today.   Please bear with me here....I am without a doubt addicted to the nic bitch.  Was thinking about being an addict to nicotine,  once an addict always an addict,  correct?    Well here is the deal,  while in the womb my mother smoked.   In theory I was born an addict....correct? So when I found tobacco it was awesome??  No biggie...I have and will continue to win this every fuckin day.  Any thought out there on this?   I am not looking for or offering excuses.   Just wanna educate myself and if it helps a foggy newby.....To sum it up....I was born addicted to nicotine,  I was a P.I.T.A baby (according to dad).  I don't know know anything for sure......just thinking aloud.
Your thought has merit. My mom smoked too.

I remember reading that in utero and adolescent exposure are both times developmentally when tendency towards addiction can be increased. I'm pretty sure I had both so it stuck in my mind. I think I read this in John Polito's book (can't remember the title right now but it's probably in my intro thread and it's downloadable for free. Rdad in your class referred me to it ) Hats off for learning all you can- that really helped my quit keep going strong. Keep up the good work! PM me if you can't find the book and I can get the title to you.

Here's another one worth reading.
Grizz, I just had that one to link! Regardless of what "got us here" the only way out is ODAAT no?
Yeah. No excuses. Just great education. I have nieces and nephews who I know for a fact were born addicts as recently as a few years ago.

I had no idea it was this severe if a problem. I'm glad dunwit brought the issue up for discussion. I'm always open to learning new information. And it explains a lot of things. Luckily my children were not born nic addicts. I do not want my grandchildren to be born nic addicts either.

This just shows me that tobacco/nicotine is the scourge of humanity. Has been for centuries. It's destroying civilizations.

Glad we are quit. Let's stay that way. Like you say Ginet, ODAAT.
And dunwit, be proud as hell if that 100% roll record. Keep that intact. I don't care who you are if you're 100% your quit is solid.
The book brettlees is referring to is "freedom from nicotine- the journey home" for what it's worth, It helped me alot.

Yep. We have all beat some ass for so many reasons.. I am with all of you; you will always have me on your side. Hate to talk about tomorrow but there is absolutely no other fucking option for dunwit. What would it be? Major cave...NO. One to get by....NO. Jimbo has a plan. Dip is just not a fucking option. It really is that simple. Nic killed mom at 37. Jim is 45, might as well hang around, even if I was born an addict. Just sayin...anything can be done..
