A lot of other people have expounded on it already and it seems like you're already into the full on quit from what I gather. However, here is a good explanation of why the "cut back" technique is ludicrous. It deals with smoking, but the principle is the same.

Kodiak06,

Welcome to the group.

The main way to be successful is to just decide that you have quit. Once you stop the negotiating in your head as to whether you will do one more or not the rest becomes far more simple.

Next, you will learn to distract your attention from your desire for a dip to anything else that interests you. This ability to change your focus will guarantee your success and make your quit that much easier.

When you place a dip in your mouth, your brain releases sugars. Well, those sugars are now going to be gone.

However, you can replace them with OJ or other fruit juices with sugar. This will provide some comfort, especially in your initial quit days.

Make sure to exercise with weights and cardio when you feel that nagging tension in your muscles, you feel that rage, when you can not sleep and when you can not focus. Exercise really helps.

Here is one that most people overlook. Get at least 3 square meals a day. Hunger can really bring on those urges so squash those urges before they come. Eat full healthy meals and do not let yourself get excessively hungry. You will see this helps a great deal.

I waited until I was 59 quit after using tobacco for 40 years. You are wise to quit now.

I quit with you today.

For 4 days I allowed myself 2 dips per day, max of 30 minutes ea. I also chewed 4-6 pieces of 7yr old nicorette.
During those days, my eyes were bugging out, my throat was itchy, and so forth.
Last nite about 2030 I got my last dip.
Today, up before 0500, no nicotine, no huge issues. I'm hoping my weaning method helped with the heebie-jeebies. Guess ill see the next couple days. Thanks for the motivation
You got this. 1 hour at a time leads to 1 day at a time!

Guess I should've added in my intro, the Kodiak in my user name is the island, not the dip...

We have traveled a similar road to this point. I dipped Copenhagen for 32 years. I am 7 days clean. At some period in the past that doesnt matter now, I also tried various ways to ween off the Nicotine. It never worked for me personally. It's kind of like dipping your toe in a cool swimming pool, chances are you never dive in. You HAVE TO DIVE IN!! Once the initial shock quickly wears off, it feels great!
To find the motivation to do it Cold Turkey, I had to get pissed! Pissed that I was allowing myself to be a slave for any period of time much less 32 years. Pissed that this Nicotine Bitch was so influential in almost every aspect in my life, and none of them positive. Pissed that I have jeopardized my precious time on this earth that I could be using to make a difference. Just pissed!!!!
Today is a new day. We will quit today. We will quit again tomorrow. I am looking forward to a new life nicotine free after 32 years. I hope you do to.
We are in the same quit group! Lets do this!!!!

I understand!

I did the same thing you are doing. I tried to slow down. Promised myself I would limit the amount of nicotine I used. It never worked.

Then I found this place. My word meant something to me. I tried to quit many times over a 24 year period. Nothing worked.

There is no doubt that this will be one of the most difficult things you will ever do.

At first.

Then things will get better. So much better that you would not believe me if I tried to explain it. You will earn your freedom. But it is worth it! You have no idea how much better your QUALITY OF LIFE will become.

P.S. When I quit, I considered myself absolutely useless at work and at home for the first week. Just realize things are going to be really bad at first. But that's a price you must be willing to pay!

Are you ready?

You can do this! I am proof! Look around, the proof is all over this site.

Welcome.

I agree, quit now. I tried the nicorette gum, wean myself off route too, and I regret it. YouÂ’re extending the withdrawals. Rip the band-aid off, and get on with your quit.

Honestly, your denial is addict speak. Your addiction is desperate to survive.

Post your promise. Stay quit.

Thanks. With all the withdrawl symptoms I read about, I wanted to wean off a bit so I didn't kill someone at work running heavy equipment. Planning on 3 more days and Wednesday no more nicotine.
Don't wait.

Don't keep putting that poisonous cat shit in your mouth dude. It's not worth it. You know you need to quit and you know you need to quit right now.

By weaning you're only delaying the process.

Setting a day never works. Quit now, you won't regret it.

Withdrawals can be a bitch, but that's what we're here for.
Reach out, get as many digits as you can, and use them when you need them.

Trust me, throw all nicotine and tobacco out right now.

We know what works here!

I've been dipping 39yrs. I typically use 1 to 1.5 cans a day from 0600-2200. My anniversary was Wednesday (31yrs marriage) and I decided to give quitting a try.
I had some nicorette gum that expired in 2011. I set a 2 dip per day limit with a 30min time limit on each and chewed roughly 5 pieces of nicorette gum. Today, up at 0500 and I have chewed no gum and just had my 2 dips.
Tomorrow, I may do 1 dip and a little gum. I'm trying to lower my nicotine intake before cold turkey to limit the effects. I've already experienced funky feelings in my eyeballs, hopefully its part of the withdrawal. I've read some of the comments from you guys and its been very helpful. Sorry if this is too long of a read but, I think I'm on the right track, I sure hope so.
Hey man. Good job finding this place. Congrats on your anniversary.

We don't try here - we do! We quit, and we quit hard.

The best and only way to quit is cold turkey.

Here's how we do things:

Wake up, post your promise not to use nicotine for the day, and keep that promise! Then repeat. One Day At A Time (ODAAT)! It's that simple.

Your group is the March 2018 Pre-HOF Quit Group!

Just click that, and go post roll. It can be tricky to figure out at first, but you'll be a pro in no time.

Let's quit!
