Hi my name is jay im 24 and am from southern maryland. I've been smoking/dipping since i was about 14.  I was a simultaneous dipper/smoker (one can a day and a half a pack a day), i quit smoking about 4 months ago and just started dipping more.  I switched to dipping snus because theres a little bit less nicotine in it than in the copenhagen but yesterday my dad was diagnosed with cancer yesterday and i said fuck it im done.  Im sick of supporting tobacco companies, im sick of wasting my money, i dont want high blood pressure/cancer or other hazardous effects to my body from dip.
Right now i just finished lunch and normally id be dipping right now, im a bit antsy and am suckin on mints and chewing gum to try to get rid of the oral fixation.  Im fed up with HAVING to stop at the gas station to get dip, im sick of depending on it.
Welcome to the Quit, Jay. Sorry to hear about your old man. I grew up in the tobacco culture of Southern Maryland myself. Calvert County's flag even has a tobacco leaf on it. I'm on day 4 so I'm not far ahead of you. Just stick to your commitment and we will get through this together.
Yep i know that calvert county flag :) Im from St Marys myself. Has anyone tried Chantix before? I got some and surprisingly it seems to be working but perhaps thats also just a placebo effect.
I'm currently deployed and the won't prescribe chantix in theater because it can cause suicidal ideations. I'm on welbutrin. I've been on it for a few days, seems to be working, I have cravings, but they aren't unreasonable and I have some of the Hooch for the rough times right after meals and when I am working late in my office at night.
Hopefully the wellbutrin works for you. Yeah i heard about the side effects of chantix too and if i start feeling strange ill stop taking it immediately. Im not looking to stay on it for too long anyways just the first 2 weeks of quitting or so, so i can get over the initial nicotine cravings.
I am currently taking chantix, I have been taken it since January 14,2011. I have not had any side effects from taking it so far. However there is some craving but it not as hard to cope with them. I am also sucking on mints and gum for the oral fixation. I am on 15 days of my quit and I haven't had any trouble. I am a little more angry than normal but it is ok as i have dealt with it. Besides that it has help quite a bit for the craving and withdrawals. I plan on taken it as prescribed which is 3 months. Matter of fact this is my last week of the starting kit.
Quit Date: January 21, 2011
HOF Date: April 30, 2011

HOF Speech

Quitting one day at a time is all that matters.
To be successful takes you being accountable.

Hey Jay, it's day 2 for me. Sorry to hear about your dad. I hope he recovers soon. Sounds like you're being smart and using this as an opportunity to learn

Great choice, Jay!!!  There are no short cuts, no pills, no patches...just honest to goodness cold turkey quitting.  I can't bullshit you...it will suck.  But remember the suck.  Use it as motivation to never touch that shit again!!!

Post roll everyday, keep your word and repeat.  It is that easy.

Stay strong, brother!!!
Thanks guys. Yeah im definately really figity now, but i think part of that is because im drinkin extra coffee to compensate for no nicotine.
Becareful of the extra caffeine. I have noticed, and many others have made note of, the fact that caffeine has a pronounced effect when nicotine is out of your body. I went from having 3 cups in the morning with my morning dip to only needing a cup, maybe a cup and a half now that I am clean.

Great job by the way! And yeah, it will suck, but this is the best thing you can do for you. Man up, battle every day, be a hero! You can do this!

Proud to be your brother in quit!

Welcome. Keep reading the site. Keep chewing the gum or mints or whatever it takes to keep the shit out of your mouth. It's not going to be easy, but it's worth it just to kick nic bitch's ass for one day. That's all we do here. Just promise not to use today. We all worry about "tomorrow" and "forever" when they get here. Glad to be quit with you. Now, use the directions below to go to the MAY HOF group and post your day 2.

Welcome, and congrats on making the best decision of your life. Head on over to the Quit Group section, and post roll call in Pre-HOF May '11. Here is how to post roll call:

Roll Call

More importantly, here is why we post roll call: Why we post roll call

Once you do that, you no longer HAVE to stop at the gas station, because you will have given your word that you are quit for today.
The problem is not the problem.  The problem is your attitude about the problem.  Do you understand?

Draw Fire

If its too much trouble to post roll call, you could always fuck off.
