I did some figuring (hey, I DID learn something in college). Bear with me, this takes a little explaining.
When I started dipping I payed about $3.80 per can of worm dirt on average. I now pay $4.50. This, I realize, is lower than what a lot of folks pay. I live in Europe and work for the Army, so I can get it tax free.
The other important fact you need to know is that I average 1.5 cans of dip per day. In 2004 that costed $5.70. Last week it costed $6.25, a gain of 8.8% over time, or 1.76% per year (simple price increases, not compounded).
Assuming I did average 1.5 cans per day for 5 years (sometimes it was more, I admit, but letÂ’s keep it simple), my spending looked something like this:
2004. 1.5(3.80)(365)=$2080.50
2005. 1.5(3.93)(365)=$2151.67
2006. 1.5(4.02)(365)=$2200.95
2007. 1.5(4.21)(365)=$2304.97
2008. 1.5(4.50)(366)=$2470.50
TOTAL $11,208.59 (rounded)
THAT is a bunch of money. But it gets worse.
Take that amount and divide it by 60 (the number of months I was dipping) and you get $186.81 per month. I never had any idea that I was spending that much on dip. Never even crossed my mind to figure it out.
If I had taken that $186.81 per month and put it into a savings account making 2% a year I would now have $11,797.00.
If I had put it into one of those nice 5% savings accounts that are out there, I would have $12,757.00.
If I had put it into a fund that gained interest at the market rate, about 7.5%, I would have $13,759.00. If I had put it in more aggressive mutual funds and pulled it out when the markets started to turn south, God only knows what I might have had.
The funny thing about addiction is that you never seem to count the cost. In addition to wrecking my health, embarrassing myself in public, and submitting to wear the nic-bitchÂ’s chain around my neck for 5 years, I have been literally throwing money away. On WORM DIRT?! God, I wonder how I ever could afford it. I could have bought a Harley or put a nice deck on the back of my house with that money.
I am PISSED. I know you guys are pissed too. I hope this adds a little fuel to the fire. NO MORE DIPPING. STAY ON YOUR QUIT.
