I am 34 and have "quit" snuff multiple times since I was 16 years old; one time I was able to stay off the snuff for about 4 months, only to buy a can and start everything over again.

I can remember too many times digging through my trash can to find a tin that I threw away a few days prior because I had "quit". It's embarrassing...I am a military officer who can command men in combat and can't command that can out of my pocket.

I don't want to get cancer, I am tired of embarrassing my wife and I am tired of looking unprofessional. The excuses (I will die some other way, its part of the society of the job, this is my last can, etc, etc) need to end today and I have to make a real change.

Hopefully, between this group, Nicorette gum and mint snuff I can toss that nasty can away forever.

Thanks for the help; I am sure I will need more.

Story sounds familiar. I started early, quit for three months while in boot camp, quit again while floating across the Atlantic, again when my first son was born, only to give in to the cravings. Not until I read some trials here was I convinced that cold turkey was the way to go. You'll do fine here, as long as you are honest with yourself and others.

welcome to the first day of your quit patrick.

a couple of items that will hopefully help you along your way.

1. remove the words "hope" and "try" from your vocabulary when it comes to quitting. you WILL quit and there is no hope. remember, "do or do not - there is no try".

2. consider going cold turkey. until you get all of the nicotine (which is what you're really addicted to) out of your system, you will never truly be free. nic gum/patches continue to deliver it to you and whether you like it or not you'll have to go through withdrawal at some point. it takes 72 hours to get it out of your system... might as well start right now.

i refuse to wish you luck -- being a successful quitter has nothing to do with luck.

glad to have you my friend... see you on roll call.

Patrick, these guys do not play around... In a matter of hours I will be 10 days nic free..10 percent of my way to the Hall of Fame.....I could not do it without posting roll in my group everyday..... You will do this, period end of story. My first 4 days were abysmal getting that nic bitch of my back. Now I am feeling better, and I am alive, and I am taking back what is mine!!!!!!!!!!!! Get a phone number from someone in your group, if they won't give you one..Pm me and get mine.. When you feel like dipping, call me and ask permission if it is ok to keep trying to kill yourself!!!!!
The Nic Whore is playing mind games with you........beat her down and refuse to cave, it is really quite easy............... Dipping can kill you, you want to quit, STOP DIPPING!!! Good Luck my friend...

Welcome Patrick, you're going to find your story to be quite similar to most of ours. You are not alone in that regard. Great choice to get involved with this site. Start posting roll each morning and make a commitment for just that day that you'll stay nicotine free. Would like to see you get off the NRT as well. Check out as much literature as you can on most effective way to quit using and I think you'll find cold turkey is the way to go. That being said, if the nicorette keeps you off the chew than so be it. We all have pivotal points in our life, this can be one of the most pivotal moments of your life. You can do this, what a great day for a quit.
There's nothing nicotine has to offer that I need. Never has been, never will be.
