Day 55 - My thoughts today go back to one hectic day 54. Not so much for myself. But my brothers who will hit the HOF in the month of Dec  Jan. We had a total of 3 guys give up. One for life situations more painful at times than the death of a loved one, one because his quit "never got easier" and one I would attribute to not having the mindset right to begin with and not posting roll daily.

I have noticed a common thread. Not one of these three guys called someone prior to caving. Not one of them seemed to have a plan that they went through: Something Like

Step 1. Read my reasons for quitting
Step 2. Read my contract to quit
Step 3. Acknowledge nicotine will not fill the hole. It created it.
Step 4. Call my 3 brothers and read my contract to quit to them.
Step 5. Talk to my wife and read my contract to quit to her.
Step 6 Call my kids and read my contract to quit to them.

That is what I must do before I cave. WHY? Because if I do that I won't cave.

So why did these three guys skip these steps?

Why will I not skip these steps? That is the important question. Because I have written them out and I have given my word and by God's grace I will keep it.

I agree Wake, they all have the "no contact" problem.
And the reason? Nobody knows.

I can only compare this to a problem I had when I was in my twenties. I was hooked on cocaine and had made several attempts to stop without success. I joined a support group and it went well at first but then the beast got back in my head.
I would get a senstation in my body that I called "Hot Head". The idea of doing a line or puffing on the crack pipe would enter my brain and I would literally feel my forehead getting warmer. I would get a tunnel vision focus on the junk and would forget all my support that was in place to help me. After doing this a few times my support was on it's last leg. Family and friends were giving up hope.

Thankfully I was able to finally stop and it was because I finally broke one of my Hot Head flashes and called someone.

Now I'm battling the Nic addiction but have the proper focus and support. I'm not afraid of calling for help. So in a strange way my coke addiction is helping me with my Nic addiction. 'Crazy'

I think when someone is getting ready to cave they are in that tunnel vision. They feel it's easier to beg for forgiveness afterwards than ask for help now.

Hopefully the next prospective caver will have read this and understand that if they choose to ignore the support and don't utitlize the tools in place that the support will start to slip away. And realize that you are not only fucking yourself over but that you are making a mockery of your Quit Brothers.

Mindless rambling on day 37....

Day 37 ended today - ran 11 miles on Saturday and Biked 30. (Split the run morning an evening) For a lot of guys on here the weekends are a tough time, for me its the opposite. I can't wait to have 2-3 hours to work out drag my kids around on the jogging stroller or behind my bike, don't even miss the stuff. Weekdays...those can suck.

I think 3 guys caved last week, really sucks. I know I would have caved without this website. Talking to my wife and preaching about the damage dipping can do, why I hate it when people cave...then I get her simple words "well you always said it wouldn't hurt you..." that is why this site is important.

Every guy I know (and there may be an exception) is to stupid for his own good and to interested in making himself happy right now. So after 5, 8, 25, 60, 300+ days whatever the number.. We decide, hey one dip would be great, I could focus better for this project, I need to finish this book for school, just on the camping trip, just on the golf weekend, just while I am driving home. AND THEN WE MAKE THE SAME FREAKING MISTAKE TWO YEARS LATER ON OUR NEXT FREAKING QUIT. .... now Killthecan enters the picture and we are reminded daily ...the stuff kills. It keeps men every year from seeing the kids grow up and leaves wives raising their families alone. While taking 1000's out of the wallet to US Tobacco and 1000's more the the stinking dentist.

I remember seeing a guy I really respected in his 50's pull out a can and put one in on the golf course. I put off even thinking about a quit for 2-3 years with the rationalization if he can do it I can. What if I don't quit and I keep someone dipping that dies from it??? This is not a game, its life and death.

So why did 3 guys this week decide death is the best way to go? Because they are willing to put the bullet in the revolver and spin the chamber and pray it doesn't go boom...WAKE UP PEOPLE.

Thanks KTC -- you guys and gals are the best. Truly a Godsend. James 1:17
Good post WAKE. The cavers in the group do leave a sense of loss. But on this matter, you must be selfish as hell. Protect your own quit first, at all costs. Then helping others that also want to help themselves. It is not possible to push a limp dick through the muck of a quit. All we can do is support those strong enough to stay on the journey.

Day 12 today - on the weight topic, seems to have moderated at about 10 lbs. I bought a bag of carrots . I am really digging those for something to munch on for the time being and even low calorie.

I hear you guys on the exercise, quitting without being able to run and bike would really suck. I have a trail-a-bike - my 4 year old son will ride on that thing for 3 hours with me and still not complain. My sleep seems to be moderating a bit too. Still wake up a few times but seem to be more rested in the morning when I do get up.

Dizzy I hear you on the 30-60 minute recovery. I was never into recovery drinks / shakes etc. I am trying different things right now and immediately downloading my garmin data to see how hard I worked. That is helping me get over that I just worked hard and want a dip crave...why in the crap did destroying my body after exercising seem like a really good idea?

Tomorrow...or even really now...is day 4 for me.  Dude...the food intake is insane.  I haven't eaten like this in years.  In fact, I sometimes used to go all day just dipping, have a really late dinner, and go to sleep.  Lost a lot of weight.

I weighed myself just now and I am 10 pounds heavier than I was a week ago.  I really need to take a shit, too.  I mean, nothing is off limits.  I am thinking about Chinese right now and I just ate a giant baked potato with SC, bacon, chives and butter.

Oh well...we can lose weight, right?  I have still been exercising but I think I may need to increase that to account for all the extra calories.

Here's to 4 days and a lifetime more.
Day 45 and i'm up between 10 and 12 depending on the time and if I've burned a mule or not. been working out and running alot. figured id give myself 50 days of not beating myself up over the extra load then make a plan to really get in awesome shape over the winter. don't sweat it and and don't let the nic bitch fool you. using nicotine to stay thin is so fucking retarded it defies even using brain cells to consider it. but, i have and that tells you how dangerous the cat and mouse game of being an addict really is.
Quit day 4 for me too Blah. Being a food consumption machine is a bit of a strange experience. The sugarless gum is getting tiresome already and everything else I am grabbing is too salty. Only gained 5 lbs to date and I am hoping about 80 miles on my bicycle will not only keep the nic bitch at bay, but burn a few of those extra calories too.

I find exercise is a great deterant while I am doing it, but the recovery time 30 - 60 mintes after a work out is a big trigger for me. But then again, what the fuck, so is everything else I do while I am awake.

Stay pissed, and stay quit.

Hey Guys - thanks for the encouragement - good to be on the quitting side of things. I may try some of the mint - I had used the fake stuff on past quit attempts. Not sure if it was the stuff or my head but it seemed like more of a frustration then a help.

Congrats on 80 days!!

exercise is a great release of the stress and rage. Also does burn up some of that extra intake. If you are feeling the urge to eat, you might try using the fake stuff (mint). I'm on day 80 - I dipped for 30 years and I use the mint. It gives me somthing to do so I'm not stuffing candy in my mouth all day at work. What I've found is that more and more time will go by when I realize I haven't used the fake stuff in hours... Your doing great and I'm glad you found this place. Keep your quit strong. PM if you need a number.

Aug 27th 11:30 pm my last dip went into my mouth. Saturday I biked for 3.5 hours, ran 4.5 miles... Sunday was church and 2 hours of surfing... Monday sucked!! 2.7 miles jogging eating everything I can get my hands on. Tuesday much of the same 3.5 miles jogging - think I am going to need to go out again tonight. The energy rush up and down is a trip, like a dang roller coaster. As you can see I run to fight the cravings. I don't think I have taken a decent crap in 96  hours and have spent way more on food then I would on dipping...........but I thank God for these 4 days and the rest of my life to go. 3 little kids don't even know to be mad at me yet for dipping and I have one happy wife.  Looking forward to meeting some of you guys on here and the 100 day knife.

I have seen some who talked about the patch and gum. I have used them all, cold turkey is the only way to go in my experience.
I say, you are the Big bad muthaF****r of the day! Well done!!! Don't worry about the food intake...it will pass soon enough! I went out and bought all new jeans, ones that didn't have skoal rings on them, only to re-purchase more to celebrate 25 days clean and 2 more inches.....about day 50 when you are clearing the fog out and can think better is the time to get to work on the belly.........But keep running, and exercising you will eventually even out!
Cold turkey is the way to get it done. Read everything you can on the site, get involved. This place and these people will save your life if you let them.
