Thanks for the encouragement guys... I'm still amazed by how long some have you have been dip-free!

steelcity-you dipped IN BMT?? How in the hell did you manage that???? That takes alot of balls... I knew one guy that got recycled because of a candy wrapper, so I can't imagine what they would do if they found a can of skoal in celing tiles! lol

wardamneagle- Sounds like we have alot in common... we both quit around the same time, around the same age, from the South... and we both hate the University of Alabama! Congrats on getting through the weekend!

P.S. I'm also here if any of you guys need me, I know I just quit, but I can always lend an ear or two.

tnguy - you brought back memories with me when you talked about quitting at AF basic training. I pulled off the impossible, I dipped through basic training. Now granted, I went through AF basic in '88...but it hasn't really changed that much. I don't know how the hell I didn't get busted, but I was able to hide my cans..hell I even bought my cope at the shopette..I just tried to look like I wasn't a trainee.. I'd have a dip during guard duty, CQ, while taking a crapper, in the shower.. anytime I could be where I wasn't under scrutiny.

Its amazing the shit we'll do for that nasty ass habit.

TN - I'm very glad you're here. After 31 years of being chained to the can, I've been free for 103 days. I plan on staying free from here on out by hanging close to my buddies here that I've lived with for the last 103 days.

You can do it. We'll help in any way we can. The first way is to show you by our example that it can be done. Don't believe the lies, we've got the walking, talking, living, breathing quitters here to prove you can do it.

You made a great choice. Now let's get it done - one day at a time.

Hey TN! I'm just on day 3 and going through almost exactly what you are...

I'm 29..Dipped for 11 years...can a day...and I am HURTING right now!!! But I'm sticking to it...

And like you, I am sticking to it after many quits..I have flushed at least $$500 worth of skoal down the toilet..Tried the gum..tried regular sugarless gum..sunflower seeds..every brand of herbal dip you can buy at my local tobacco outlet..nothing worked more than a few hours..

Now I'm on day 3! so i've already tripled my longest quit..And like I said..It is damn near painful at this point..I am just trying to stay busy..But I'm going to do it..I'm going to grow a pair and not make any excuses for myself this time, and I know damn well you can too!!

I'm here for ya anything you need! Just let me know!

Good morning everybody! I just wanted to give a brief introduction and my "story" on my first day of quitting. I'll be 27 years old on July 18th, and I've been dipping Skoal since I was 18. I'll never forget that first time dipping in college. I got the biggest buzz ever, but vowed to myself that I'd never let the "addiction" take over. That first year of college, I dipped maybe a can every two weeks... just when I had to stay up to study for a big test, or when my friends came over to play video games. Sooner or later it became 1 can every week, then 1 can every 3 days. I let the addiction take over before I even realized it.

After graduating college, I decided to join the Air Force. I went to Basic Training at the beginning of October of '05 and HAD to quit. I'll never forget the feeling I had when I left basic training... I was in shape, and dip-free. I kept it up until Christmas of '05 when I was able to go home to see my family. That is where shit hit the fan. I went out with my buddies and sure enough, one of them had a can ready for me. I didn't even think about it, I just put that shit right in my mouth and pissed 2.5 months of being dip-free down the drain.

About 3 weeks ago, I came to this site. At the time I was deployed to Bosnia, and saw an upcoming trip to London as the PERFECT time to dip. I spoke to a few people that night in chat, and I was ready to take the plunge! In fact, I quit the next day but never posted on this board because I was scared of failing. I had failed so many times before, so why wouldn't I fail again? I went on that trip to London, stayed dip-free the 4 days I was there, and as soon as I got back to Bosnia I bought a tin can.

Now, I'm back in the USA and BEFORE I quit I was throwin' down a can a day. I can't tell you how many times I've quit before. I've tried the "weening yourself off method" and I've tried the "put nicorette gum in your mouth instead" method, but it never worked for me. Tonight, I couldn't sleep and came to your chatroom once again. Within minutes there were about 6 people in chat encouraging me to quit. I told everybody about my fear of letting people down, when someone said to me, "you shouldn't be scared of quitting, you should be scared of dipping." I know that makes perfect sense, but I never thought about it that way. So I took my can, flushed the shit down the toilet, and decided this is day 1 of being dip-free.

I'm sorry for the book I just wrote, but I felt like I had to write all of that so you know just a little more about me. The few that I talked to in chat earlier, thanks... I needed the push, and I'm glad I've started this. I'm sure I'm going to need help along the way and from browsing this site it looks like there's more than enough people willing to help. Thanks again, I look forward to getting to know all of you, and here's to DAY 1!!

tnguy,

Thanks for your story it reads pretty much the same as almost everyone else here.
The good thing is you made a winning choice, and with the help of everyone here you will susceed. I was one of the people in chat and after 30 years of a can or more a day habit I have quit for 175 days today.

Don't think that this will be easy but just remember that none of the good things in life are easy or free but so worth it.

Just take it one day at a time, and shoot me a PM I'll be glad to give you my numbers as a back up in case of emergency.

Welcome aboard and welcome to the first day of the rest of your dip free life!
