Just my two cents. I think some of us are born addicts because of DNA, not because our Mom smoked while we are in the womb.
I imagine a lot of addicts' moms smoked while they were in the womb...because they were addicts also. They passed the trait along via the DNA double helix...not through the umbilical cord.
I think it's simply undeniable that a mother who smokes or ingests nicotine in any form during pregnancy is going to pass that nicotine through the bloodstream, on to the unborn child. In turn making the unborn child physically dependent on nicotine. When the child is born he/she will naturally go through physical withdrawals similar to what we all went through as adults.
http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/releases/3703.phpNot condemning the smoking mothers. Just think it's a plain and simple fact. And it shouldn't be denied. Also, not making excuses for my or our own addict behavior.
So I do think some of us could possibly be born addicts because our mother's smoked while pregnant. Seems logical.
But you raise a whole separate issue with your statement regarding the double helix: Is there a genetic trait for addiction? Honestly, I don't know. And I haven't researched it yet.
Anyway, it can't be a bad thing to learn as much as possible about nicotine addiction.
