Couple of things about your post.......we don't TRY to quit on this site....We BY GOD QUIT on this site..one day at a time.  You need to get your mind wrapped around the addiction and get:
A) Pissed at US tobacco who knowingly got you hooked on their product without informing you of the difficulty in quitting.
B)  Post early in the day and realize that you are looking me in the eye and promising me and everyone else on this site that no matter how hard it gets,  you will NOT dip today.  We'll worry bout tomorrow when it gets here.
c)  just my opinion.....the patches, nic gum or lozenges are just another vehicle to feed your addiction....NICOTINE.   All you are doing is lengthening the withdrawal process.   Obviously, if you caved after 3 and 4 months respectively....you went back to dippin about the same time you were due to come off the patch....face it, you are 0 for 2 using the patch.....

Grab your balls,  squeeze hard and throw the shit away.  After 3 of the worst days you will ever face...the nic will be out of your body.  Then it becomes a mental thang......you will find all the support, information and assistance from a group of guys going thru the same shit you are and are very sincere about helping you with your quit.....but you gotta lead the way with your own quit.  Man up and let's get this done.....throw away all dip, patches, anything you got and really quit this time.

I promise it is not a decision you will ever regret.....
Thanks everyone for chiming in and giving me your support.

I would like to discuss some of the issues from the post above.

1) I am not pissed at US Tobacco or anyone else for my Copenhagen use. I have no one to blame but myself. I knew when I first tried it in high school that tobacco was bad for you; cigarettes or dip. But I think all of us knew that when we started. For whatever reason we all decided to try it because our dad used it, our friends used it, whatever. I played baseball and that's what everyone did, so I decided to try it out. It was my choice, nobody forced any of us to buy a can. Same goes with anything else; alcohol, fast food, gambling - too much of anything can have negative effects. I think all of us knew this going into it, whether it was something new to try or as it was promoted back in the day as a "safe" alternative to cigarettes - we all chose to start and it got us to where we are now. I am not mad at anyone and I only have me to blame.

2) I think patches are a great way to tone down the cravings. I can't tell you how many times I tried to go cold turkey and only made it a couple of days. I was miserable and I made everyone else miserable around me. The only times I have had some sucess at quitting was on the patch. I bought 2 boxes that last 2 weeks and made it through a week with the patch on without dipping, then I went cold turkey. These runs lasted 3 months and 4 months. I should have stair stepped down on the different dosage levels and used them all. This would have put me 42 days out on the patch before going cold turkey. Then starting the mental game from there would be easier since I have gradually lowered my nicotine intake.

I commend all of you cold turkey guys, because I didn't last very long going that route. I am hoping w/ the Wellbutrin and patches it helps me kick this habit once and for all.
Get real, You should be pissed at U.S. Tobacco. They love guys that aren't pissed at them. Do you think an 18 year old knows what the fuck is good for him? U.S. Tobacco loves High School Kids. They still think like they have control. This shit will kill you. This isn't like fast food or gambling, this shit will hook you and kill you. No, you didn't know this when you started, what you knew is that it gave you a great buzz. Don't even try to shit me. Fuck your patches. Use the gum for two weeks to try and destroy the hand to mouth movement. Good Luck. Cold Turkey will bring you to the promised land, brother. Otherwise all you are doing is increasing your agony as a nicotine deprived prick. Cold Turkey gets you over that in three days. DO IT!

Do whatever will help you beat the addiction, that will always be my common theme. You need to find what works for you.

With that being said, beware these NRT things (nicotine replacement ie patch gum). Like Mule mentioned they are putting off the inevitible. Eventually you will be without nicotine for the first time. If you use them according to their label and wean yourself off, that's one thing. But the temptation will be there to stay on them, make them your crutch for just a while longer. That's not okay, that's just a longer path to failure.

There is no magic pill that is going to get you through this. Even if you take the pill to Loot's matrix it will be hard work to give this up. But it is possible. You just have to take the same ownership that you showed in that first paragraph. You CAN go cold turkey. You can do it because you are going to come to the site 1st thing everyday and give me your word that you won't use tobacco in any form today. And then you will do the same tomorrow. Then all you have to do is be a man of your word. See how easy it is. In return, I post roll and give you my word that not only will I be tobacco free for today but I will also do anything in my power up to and including grabbing you by your bottom lip to keep you from putting a dip in.
I've always wanted to save a life, so I started with mine.

Well, I am going to give this quitting thing hell again. Been dipping for 13 years and I would like to hang around a while to see my son get old.

The fact is that I do enjoy dipping. Nothing beats sitting in the drive way w/ some whiskey, a nice Copenhagen fattie and some classic rock on the radio.

I have noticed alot lately that when I put a dip in I feel like shit and I don't do anything productive. I don't even really think I enjoy dipping as much as just having something in my lip or mouth to chew on. I can get by on gum or candy for a day or two, but the cravings drive me nuts after that. I quit for 4 months about 2 years ago and 3 months about a year ago.

I have noticed that when I am on the patch and chew gum or something it helps me get by. I dip at home, but on the weekends I usually don't have a problem going without one (unless we have some friends over for drinks). My biggest struggle is sitting behind a desk for 8-9 hours everyday at work and not dipping. My work day consists on drinking a Red Bull, popping a dip in, go to lunch and come back and pop another dip in. When it's time to go, the dip comes out and I head to the house. Usually have one after dinner, too.

I got back on the patch today, stocked up my gum supply and I started on Wellbutrin last week. I was told that it works alot like Zyban to help control cravings (haven't noticed any differences though).

Gonna give it hell again!! 'Remshot'
Welcome.

I had a 28 plus year copenhagen habit that i gave up 110 days ago. I have been on Welbutrin and after about a week, i noticed it did seem to help me. I really don't notice it doing a lot now but i also don't crave near as much or as hard.
