Budman - I am originally from New Haven Connecticut. After high school I enlisted in the Marines, in 1968 and if you enlisted at that time you knew where youÂ’re sorry butt was headed. Over the years I became a serial quitter. First when I got married and then when I had my first kid. I canÂ’t remember how many times total that I tried. I got to be honest and admit that at times I was pretty disgusted with myself.
I went on-line and found Kill the Can but I kept putting off my next quit. I guess I just didnÂ’t want to fail again. Then one day I ran in to a guy that I had not seen for a while and he starts telling me about his wifeÂ’s nephew who had part of his face cut away because of cancer. Well that was all I needed to get back on the wagon and give it another try. Only difference was that this time I went back to this web site and joined the November 2013 quit group. This was the first time that I had tried it with a group and not all by myself. I am absolutely convinced that it is what made the difference. The daily post was keeping me off the poison when I wanted to cave in the beginning. Just knowing that I was being held accountable made a difference. I also read the stories of the guys that had gone before me. It showed that everything that I was going through was beatable if I only hung in there.
I currently live in Manassas, VA. My two daughters are grown up and moved out. My hobbies are working outside in the garden, weather permitting. I am also an avid history buff. Mostly US history. Just about the only sport that I follow regularly is baseball which I really love. My favorite team is the World Champion Boston Red Sox.
For the last 24 years I have worked on Capitol Hill at the House of Representatives. I am senior technician in charge of communications at the House.
Thank you to everyone associated with this site. All those that have taken the time to contact me and show that there are people that care about me. Who show me that there are great people in this world that sometimes seems like it has none.
It has been an honor to go on this journey with all the guys from the November 2013 quit group. I will continue to post roll, at least for a while. DonÂ’t want to say goodbye just yet I guess.

Buddy,
Congratulations on hitting day 100. I am damn glad to have been able to get to know you more, and even more proud to call you a brother x2 (USMC and KTC). Continue to be you, I would ask that you show everyone here how well composed you are and just how well you can write and the amount of things you have to say. You have inspired me and I appreciate that sir.

Budman, you have been welcomed by some of the best folks this site has to offer. They have given you sound advice. They have offered you the tools you will need to quit and will show you how to use them, but you must take the first step on this journey. Welcome aboard and check the upper right hand corner of this page for Inbox (1). Open it and you will find a message from me. It has my telephone number. Call me and let's get this party started.

Welcome

I wouldn't worry much about the fake dip, it has it's place and it won't form a new habit. I bought 4 cans when I quit 23 days ago and went through them in about 6 days and never bothered to go buy anymore. They helped for the days when I needed them. It amazes me that I got used to my lip being empty so quickly as I dipped every second I was awake for 35 years.
Oh little worm-dirt...you are so scary...F' OFF...!!!

Budman,

I looked for your name on the Nov. Roll, but didn't see it. Hopefully, you just need a little more guidance.

Click here -- Roll Call, Why we do it
Click here -- How to Post Roll

The bottom line regarding fake is as long as it doesn't contain nicotine and works for you it's allowed. I personally tried it, a few different brands, but didn't like the texture or flavors. Also, for me, it was kind of strange to put something in my lip that was supposed to resemble dip. For me, alternatives like gum, seeds, tea bags, hard candy, flossers, and Atomic Fireballs kept my yapper occupied. Eventually, even the oral fixation goes away.

Holler at me if I can be of help to you.

The method is completely up to you, sir, as long as it does not have nicotine in it. There are folks here that used fake and also folks that didn't use it. The beautiful part is that nobody is gonna give your a hard time either way you go with that. Just post roll and honor your word, and everybody will support you.

My personal approach was that I never even tried the fake dip. I wasn't just tired of the addiction, I was also tired of everything that went with it:
-Tired of double-checking that I wasn't leaving my can behind.
-Tired of constantly worrying if I had enough dip to get through whatever event I was involved in.
-Tired of crap stuck in my teeth.
-Tired of looking like an idiot with a mouthful of cancer.

So, no way was I gonna continue something that reminded me of what I was trying to quit. Just felt like being handcuffed to the enemy. But, I've got some very good friends here who would have probably failed without the fake. But, man, I must have chewed a pickup load of sunflower seeds.

There's my reasoning. Hope it helps you some.

Shoot me a PM if you need anything.

You will learn quickly that the people here really are here to help and most will jump in when they see a need. Don't ever ask a question on here and not want to hear an opinionated answer because everyone will let you know their opinion without a hesitation. However, if you want to hear the truth and you like brutal honesty and accountable people then you found the right place.

Welcome brother.

Wow, I didn't expect reply's so quick. You guys are great. I have actually been using tea leaves from time to time when the craving got strong. I'll get over to the roll call page and try that. Heck I figured this out I should be able to work that too.
Thanks for the quick responses.

Hopefully I'm doing the correctly and someone is actually seeing this.
I have been dipping for almost 40 of my 64 years but God willing I'm on the right track to finally quit. August 1st was the first day without any tobacco in my life for a very long time. I'm hanging in there and really feeling the "fog" that I've been reading about on this site. I was considering ordering some of the mint snuff substitutes that I see advertised but I was wondering what others thought of them. Does it really work as a substitute? Would it be best just to quit cold turkey? What do you think?
Thank you,
BudMan :)
Welcome Budman-
Great decision to quit, one you will not regret! Click on the salmon colored link on the banner called WELCOME CENTER. Read everything there, especially how to post roll in your Hall of Fame Quit Group (I presume Nov13).
I used copenhagen for almost 40 years. I have been clean for 551 days now. It is glorious to no longer be a slave to my addiction. If I can do it, so can you. You just have to want it and make the effort.
I don't have advice on fake, I didn't use a substitute when I quit. Ate a ton of altoids, gum and seeds instead, but so long as there is no nicotine use whatever helps you. I'll quit with you today!
Fish, eat, sleep. Repeat.

Welcome aboard BudMan. It sounds like you have a good quit going on already. This place will help a lot. Seems as though you did quit cold turkey (the only way to do it). You stopped putting nicotine into your holes. Use any nicotine free method to help you right now. Fake stuff, seeds, coffee beans, whatever, don't worry about it. That will take care of itself over time. The main thin now is to do anything to keep the cravings at bay.
Read everything you can on this site, and go to the welcome center section and learn about posting roll. That is the foundation of our quits here at KTC
Glad to be quit with you
