Thank you all for the support. Agree with everything that has been posted.... Now!! I minimized my ADDICTION for years, "oh I don't do it that often", "nobody knows Im dipping in Church", or "Look how much that guy dips, I would never do that... ".

Well Im on day 4, and with some fake chew I'm working through. Glad you all are here with me. All the advice has been great. One question for you veterans. Does the oral fixation ever go away? I think that is what I struggle with most.
This. Wow does that ever sound familiar the whole "I'm not that guy"  "I'm not that addicted". All the justifications that make it seem just fine. Seems bizarre now. Proud to be quit with you today  proud of you for recognizing these false hopes for what they are.

What OIB said. I've been using hooch for my quit  so far I can't see the oral fixation part going away. But that's fine for now, it's not tobacco, so on day 46 only I'll accept that crutch. I'm told it does lessen for some, like it did for OIB, but I have yet to get there to know.

I feel you on that question. I thought the oral fixation would NEVER go away. In the early days, I got that "Nip the Grip" because I read somewhere that it was a decent crutch for Kodiak dippers. It came in the mail and I was so excited. I opened it up and it was fucking SEA SPONGE soaked with peppermint stuff. Wow. Nonetheless, it totally helped. And, it made me realize how absurd it had been to stick tobacco in my mouth. I had a problem with sticking flavored sponge in my mouth, but not tobacco? Something was obviously wrong with me. I switched to Smokey Mountain after that, but I probably only went through a couple cans. That realization with the sea sponge had a pretty powerful impact on the appeal of fake stuff.

I then went on a chewing gum tear. I spent about $100 on chewing gum over the first 300 days or so of my quit. I bought three huge 600 piece tubs of sugar free gum and chewed the fuck out of it. That lasted to around day 300, when I went to Amazon and though, "dang . . . do I need to spend $30 on gum?" and decided to just buy some Dentine Ice if I felt the need to occupy my mouth.

I never did.

So, my oral fixation was pretty much negligible at 300 days. Some guys chew Smokey years after they're quit, and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. Your mileage may vary.

My kids call it worm dirt, I tell them that I eat worm dirt which they can't understand. And neither can I, so Im her with a quit date of yesterday. My 11 year olds birthday. Hopefully I will see alot more birthdays now. I have been dipping for around 18 or so years. Started in the military at 18, and have kept with it for a long time. I don't know if I have ever been a hardcore dipper usually a 2 can a week habit. Now. I have used some smokey mountain to deal with this, and also a few pieces of nicorette gum. I dont know if this is frowned upon here, let me know. Keep me honest, and hold me accountable, as Im sure you all will do.

Welcome Danandy. I was a 2 can a week guy too, just a little here  there, but I still had it in all the time. All that is though is an excuse to not quit for whether you're a 2 can a week guy or a 2 can a day guy, this is still a hard road to go down. So congrats on your decision!

1. It is an addiction. Derk40 addressed the other key parts of hardcore vs softcore.

2. If you weren't an addict, then you wouldn't have a use for the nicotine gum. For further reading (to my shame) about nicotine gum, please read my intro thread. I didn't use it, but it was a foolish risk that I took.

Listen to the people on here. They are right. They are trying to help you.

Welcome to KTC and hope to see you posting sooner rather than later! 'archer'

The Nic gum is bad news my friend. This site is about cold-turkey no nicotine quitting. It can be done. Hell, we all did it.
The smokey mountain is fine- put whatever you want in your mouth if it helps, but we are here quitting nicotine. Sure, we preferred it in dip/chew form, but the addiction is to nicotine. The idea that they sell nicotine to quit nicotine is downright shameful.
Toss the gum and then go to the welcome center (top left pink button) and learn about posting roll. Quit with us. You can do this.
This man ^^ knows how to quit. Listen to him. You haven't quit until you quit. There is only one way to do this. Cut your addiction right at the source. The same company that makes the poison in the can is the same company that puts the poison in the gum. Take your life back my friend. There is a quitter in you,, i since it.
Yep. All good advice.

Toss that nicotine gum right now and quit for real. Ignore that broken part of your head that's saying "oh, but that nicotine gum was expensive" or "ooooohhhh, but quitting cold turkey is so hard." That's the addict calling the shots for you. Dig deep. There's still plenty of gray matter that's not controlled by tobacco. Use it and toss all the nicotine, come to January '14 (that's a link to your quit group) and post your promise to be a free man today.

We are here to be free of nicotine, and if you jump in with all your heart and take this seriously, this site can help you reach that goal. And while people will tell you that you should take what you like here and leave the rest, we will not compromise with anyone about nicotine use in any form.
welcome glad to see you got rid of the gum and posted roll. when posting roll put your user name first then day then what ever else. sent you a pm with contact info. stick around make friends.

The poison sucks. I hate it. I hated it this morning, I hated it at noon, I hated it at supper and I hate it tonight. I enjoy hating it so much I'm going to wake up tomorrow and start over hating it. I quit with anyone that wants to hate it with me.

Yep, dump the nicorette gum. That is just keeping you a slave! The goal here is to quit one day at a time  break free of that addiction.

A hardcore dipper? Are there softcore dippers? Those words do not compute with me and not sure what they are... You are either an addict or you are not. People dip different amounts and for different amounts of time. You are using nicorette gum as a substitute, can't quit, are on this site... so I would surmise that you are an addict.

Read the welcome center, throw out your gum, quit  post roll for day 1. You will not regret it.
