The Comma
Well, I’m late. This tradition seems to have died out shortly after I walked in the door, so I’ll sign my name to this ledger and see if it sparks a renewal. 1,437 today.
Reflecting on the past 1,000 plus days is interesting. HoF feels like a long, long time ago now though it’s been less than 4 years. One thing is for sure, the steps haven’t changed. The best way to stay quit is still to make your promise and keep your word.
I remember hearing early on that the odds were high that many of the people around you would cave out and vanish. Maybe to be seen again as a retread, maybe to be a ghost of quitting past. That’s certainly proven to be true. The interesting thing is who you lose. Noisy November lost one of our loudest members to the funk. My phone book is littered with numbers of “strong quitters” that have simply disappeared. Oddly, a few of the quieter ones are still around.
So, what do we do with this information? Well, first of all, I would suggest to the new quitters and the fresh Hall of Famers, deepen your relationships. Superficial activity doesn’t create the brotherhood we’re looking for in the secret formula (Accountability + Brotherhood = Success). Talk to some guys (gals) on the phone, better yet, meet in person and share a meal. You can cut up with people online as much as you want without ever really forming a bond. When you do that, cutting ties is easy.
It would be really hard for me to vanish from someone like
@peloncito, who I talk with frequently about life outside of KTC. Even some new connections like
@Trithious, whom I’ve been recently gotten acquainted with. We’ve bonded over our mutual love of God and our similar taste in music. How can I just walk away from that? I can’t. There are more that I haven’t listed, in fact there are numerous people inside KTC that I consider true friends. We truly share in real, brotherly relationships.
Next, if you haven’t already, I’d encourage you to invest into the newest group. Not only are you shepherding the new sheep, but you are constantly reminding yourself what day 1-30 looks like. At 1,000+ days, it’s hard to remember the suck. Experience it vicariously through newbs so you never have to experience it for yourself again.
That’s enough for now. Catch you on roll in the morning. Hit my DMs if you want to chat.
Ed.
