And the answer to your question is YES it does make sense. I don't hate dipping either. I hated that feeling of guilt and the addiction being stronger than me as well. I also hated worrying that the dip I was stuffing in my lip was going to be the bad one, I hated that I may be directly responsible for the demise of my children's father, and I hated the looks of disgust I would get. Those were the factors that led me to quit. Now, the fact that I have such good friends in this community is in that list of reasons to stay quit too.
I've always wanted to save a life, so I started with mine.

I have a question. first here's my story. 33 yrs old, dipping for 20 years. quit a million times, and have dumped cans into the toilet dozens of times. Bought another pack of gum which I will dump after reading all this today. The quitting in the past has been easy on many occasions for the first few days, and then I convince myself "that was easy. I can do that anytime. I can just take one dip, since I'm fishing" etc. I've also sworn off alcohol for 1 year, since I always dip when i drink. I think quitting beer will actually be the easy part.

now my question... I've heard that smoking cigs constricts blood vessels, and I was wondering if it is the smoke or the nicotine?

Does using dip do the same thing? This is important for me because I'm into weightlifting pretty seriously and constricted blood vessels would be a huge detriment.
I quit a few times. Once for about a year. On the request of my daughter. Once I did it for that long I knew it would easy to do again. I did quit again. This time it was cancer that assisted my quit. Don't allow that to be your reason.

I am sure you have read chewies link by now but just in case, yes, it's the nicotine that constricts the blood vessels. It has been heavily linked to heart disease.

Once you have been quit for about 72 hours it is no longer the nicotine that controls you. It is the dip demons in your head. They'll convince you that you have proved you can quit so go ahead and dip. There is only one decision- whether you control your life or the dip demons do.

yeah, that's pretty much what is was, the dip demons. I could be totally resolved to quit (i thoght) until I heard them, helping me to rationalize why it would be OK. It made perfect sense at the time.

I do want to quit, but I don't hate dipping. (does that make sense?) What I hate is feeling guilty about having the bad habits, and feeling too weak to overcome it.

i gave away the rest of my gum, so tomorrow will be my first real day. well, another first real day, but the last one.

does quitting in any way improve the quality of my sleep?
I hear that at first sleep is hard to come by. But i haven't noticed that, I have always had problems falling asleep to begin with.
I found that I didn't require as much sleep after I quit. Probably because I wasn't wore out from my heart beating 100 beats a minute being jacked up on the nic.

My sleep sucked for at least the first 30 days. So you may as well realize that it is a tough battle to end your addiction.

Now I do sleep much better, and I don't need as much sleep. I suppose your milage may vary since so many things affect sleep.

Fight the good fight brother. Everything is better after you quit.

welcome ed!

the short answer is "the nicotine" - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nicotine_gum

the longer answer is, you should quit right now, today... and never look back. if you've quit a million times, then you've never REALLY quit.

quit once... and be done. we can help.

just some friendly advice- YOU CAN DIE OF NICOTINE OVERDOSE- be sure to use as directed. ;)
Thanks. On it like a big hound on a pork chop!

Directions have now been read. All looks good to go.
Now I think it is almost time to cut the gum out too.
Not sure I have enough balls to try that yet though.

Those words need to come out of your quit my friend. You ARE ready! You CAN do this! There are hundreds of folks right here that should serve as an example to that.
