Welcome Doc. I'm an accountant who used to chew - for 23 years. The nic whore is evil, and she will dig her dirty claws into anyone she can, even doctors, and a 21-year old beautiful church youth leader WOMAN I know. Take it serious, doc. You and I are full blown nicotine junkie addicts! We are quit, but if we take one "hit" the whore will have us locked down again. I'm quit with you today. Hang in there, I know it sucks for you right now, but it's going to get better soon.

Nicotine is no respecter of persons. It can sink its clutches into anyone. Breaking the chains of this addiction is the hardest yet most rewarding thing I have ever done. You have found the right place to help you quit and stay that way Doc! Welcome.

Doc, I fixed your roll post this morning, you posted on Thursday's again. The fog you feel means you are healing! In lieu of thanks, may I send you a picture of a sore I have had for the last 13-14 years. It's in a very private spot.
I always kinda wondered what a "thumblewort" was...and no, I don't want to see any pictures.

you have some really strong quitters already helping you in here-- keep those connections!
I advise you to be as involved as you can here. The psychological effects of the addiciton include some really strange stuff that even a medical doctor might not get until you are a little ways removed from the active addiction. Those dopamine circuits are pretty basic mammalian wiring! One of the things the addiction leads us to do is isolate, in various ways-- but a network of support can help replace what the poison used to do for our brains - only in a new, healthy way.

Glad to read your intro, and to support your quit!
This info helped me early on, and still does today: https://whyquit.com/whyquit/linksaaddiction.html

Quitters I’ve met so far: Ihatecope, >Pinched<, T-Cell, grizzlyhasclaws, Canvasback, BaseballPlayer, Cbird65, ERDVM, BradleyGuy, Ted, Zeno, AppleJack, Bronc, Knockout, MookieBlaylock, Rdad, 2mch2lv4, MN_Ben, Natro, Lippizaner, Amquash, ChristopherJ, GDubya, SRohde  -- always eager to meet more!

Griffin,

Thanks for the support, I'm going to need it. Looking forward to posting another 98 roll calls with you.[/quote}

98? That's just the beginning. This addiction doesn't go away and if your wise you won't either (from this site that is).
Welcome and congratulations. There are a lot of tools, literally and figuratively, on this site. Your number one weapon is knowledge about your enemy...the nic whore. So arm yourself and prepare to fight.
When it gets tough, slow down, breath deep and focus...the crave will pass with or without nicotine. But, if you use...they will never get better.
PM me if you need anything.

There are a number of healthcare professionals on this site, ranging from doctors, to pharmacists, to dentists, to nurses, and paramedics and as sick as it sounds, I always find it refreshing when another one of us joins the likes of KTC. I feel like there is an added sense of irony for us, because on paper, you would think we would know better. I'm of the licensed drug dealing profession and knowing the line of work we all contribute to is the perfect breeding ground for nicotine addiction. High stress, long hours, and sometimes mundane work that requires another fixation to occupy the time. Basically medical work is like a sweaty ass, the perfect breeding ground for fungal infection, the same way our lifestyle is a breeding ground for addiction.

The good news my friend, all of that is a complete load of bullshit. One thing I've learned is that no matter the walk of life we come from, nicotine and addiction doesn't give a fuck. We're all perfect breeding grounds for addiction. So all that stress and addict beliefs that you need dip to get through your day is a load of shit. I have been quit for almost 9 months and every aspect of my life is better and more fulfilling now that I have realized I can succeed in all those facets without a piece of turd in my lower lip. Buy into this program, embrace it, and make it a way of life. Start by posting roll and building accountability. I promise you, quitting dip will feel better than any academic achievement you've ever obtained. Not to mention a few friends for life you'll gain along the way. It won't be easy, but I would expect someone like yourself to be ready for this at all costs.

Look forward to seeing you on roll.

I think it is wonderful that you are going to set the example for your patients. When a patient is told the health risks of being overweight, unhealthy lifestyle, ect. it tends to be less effective when they smell the stench of chew on you. LOL You can do anything you set your mind to do. You control your destiny. The most important thing we do here is post our promise to our quit brothers that we will not use nicotine in any form for today only. We honor our promise for the day. God willing we wake up the next day we repeat the process. I would tell you good luck but we don't believe in luck. We choose to be quit everyday. You can make that choice as well and will have thousands of quitters on this site that have your back. Welcome.

I once was a chewing doc, but I quit 137 days ago. Honestly, fear was not a huge factor for me. I just really, really hate being controlled by an addiction. Let me tell you, freedom is wonderful.

If you stick this out, you will learn that the idea that nicotine helps with stress is a lie addicts tell themselves to keep using. When does anyone ever NOT have stress? Plus, withdrawal sucks, even during the 1st hour. So; we tell ourselves, "Now is not a good time to quit...maybe after ______ ." Believe me, after 30 days off chew you will feel WAY better than you EVER do while chewing. Stress or no stress.

Your December quit group will be a great source of support. Get involved, get other's numbers and text each other. Remember how crappy you feel right now and over the next few days. Vow to never go through it again.

The intros are one of many great resources on this site. You will learn much more about nicotine addiction here than you ever did in med school or residency.

ChewingDoc,
Welcome and congratulations on your decision to quit.
Read everything on this site, get over to December HOF 2014 post roll and build a network of support.
The fear is good motivation (motivates me as well) and a good place to start. But when you heal up, and feel better will your quit be as strong?
Check your inbox for a PM, get some gum and candy and fake chew if you need it.

Hi everyone. I am a 29 year old medical doctor who dips. I started dipping a bit in college, every now and again (maybe once or twice a month). I became addicted to skoal in medical school. I did it as a form of stress relief from my school work and then from my job. I have dipped every day for 2.5 years, consuming anywhere from 4-7 tins a week. My teeth are stained yellow, I now have high blood pressure, and I was getting frequent sores in my mouth. I'm quitting for health reasons. I'm happy I found this site, which I had visited a number of times while contemplating quitting. I'm going to need all the support I can get.
