Stopper:  A stopper uses words like hope  try  want  canÂ’t.  A stopper thinks he or she is a special butterfly.  A stopper really does not understand or believe that they are an addict.  A stopper feels sorry for themself.  A stopper thinks life is not fair.  A stopper knows deep down inside that they will dip again even before they “attempt” to stop.  A stopper is a slave. 'cry'

Quitter:  A quitter eliminates the option of dipping from their life.  A quitter’s heart is filled with hate and disgust for nicotine and Big Tobacco; there is no room for self-pity.  A quitter is willing to suffer through every second for the next 24 hours because he or she has too much integrity to break their word.  A quitter knows that they are an addict and will do everything in their power to avoid ever putting that cancer-causing poison in their mouth again.  A quitter is a free man or woman.

“This is gonna hurt me more than it hurts you.”

That’s what my Dad said right before he took the belt to my rear end. I didn’t believe him back then, but now I think he was sincere. He whooped my butt because he loved me. He did it so I would learn. He did it so I wouldn’t end up in prison. He did it so I would know there are consequences for breaking the rules. He did not coddle me in my transgressions and say it’s okay you are trying to be good but “slipped up”. He said if you break the rules you get your ass whooped. And I learned very quickly he meant it.

I have a friend who runs an oilfield service company. He had seven fatalities at his company in three years. All of them car wrecks. All of them were not wearing their seat belts (a company rule). He gathered up all his employees for the umpteenth time and told them they would be fired if they did not wear their seat belt. He then told his division manager to catch the next guy leaving their yard without his seat belt on and fire him on the spot. The next guy was his top employee, the operations manager. As instructed, the operations manager was fired on the spot for not wearing his seat belt.

He has not had a single fatality in the five years since then. Pretty sad that people wonÂ’t wear their seat belt to save their damn life but will to save their job.

In my company I went around to all of our field locations and told everyone that wearing a seat belt was just another piece of PPE (personal protective equipment, like a hardhat) and if they did not wear it they would be fired. A few months later an employee got in an accident and was cited for not wearing his seat belt. I fired him that day. I really, really did not want to fire him. Made me feel like shit.

I have not had a single fatality amongst the 3 dozen or so car accidents my guys have had since. Every single one was wearing their seat belt.

The rules on this site are pretty simple. Don’t use nicotine. Keep your word. Don’t use multiple aliases. If you break the rules, don’t be surprised at the consequences. There is no accountability without consequences. For those of you who want to award ribbons for “trying”, please remember there are many, many lives we are trying to save, not just the one that broke the rules. You do not help anyone if you do not hold them accountable.
Bump 'cause the last guys post was bout a year out of date.

Notdeadyet,
Your quitting experience is definitely not unique. Everyone goes thru the funk, headaches, naseau, depression, longing, and self-pity. It is definitely a minefield that each of us walk thru but we all saw the "warning" sign before we entered.
The best thing I can tell you about not being unique is that you will eventualy become free of the addiction and life takes a turn for the better. We all get there sooner or later but I cannot tell you how good it is when you get there. I am celebrating 706 days of Quit and wondering why it took me 30 years of slavery to a can to figure this out. Never again! Honor your word daily and own your Quit!!!!
Quit today all day long!!!

I listened to a Chamber of Commerce youth leadership speech today at lunch. The speaker started off with a joke: “When I was in high school I told my Mom that I do not know what I want to be in life. My Mom told me that I will become whatever I think about all day and night. So I figured I would either become a girl or a can of beer!”

Sad thing is when I was in high school I would’ve added “or a can of Cope” to the punch line. But not today. After 617 days quit I will only become pussy or a beer.
I needed that today. Thanks.. 'crackup'

The poison sucks. I hate it. I hated it this morning, I hated it at noon, I hated it at supper and I hate it tonight. I enjoy hating it so much I'm going to wake up tomorrow and start over hating it. I quit with anyone that wants to hate it with me.

Paul passed away yesterday. What a horrible way to die.  So damn sad.  So damn real.  Tobacco is a killer.

I never believed I could quit dip until Paul told me about his stomach cancer.  I refuse to ever be such a selfish, spineless, dumbass again.

Thank you Paul for saving my life.  Who knows, maybe you saved a few others too.
My condolences to his family, and to you and yours.

Appreciate you telling us about him and involving the rest of us in the hope that we may also find that silver lining that can help the rest of us in our quit as well.

Be strong my friend.
sorry for your loss, NDY.

keep telling his story, and don't spare the details of his treatment. people on the fence need to hear their potential future with dip in their lives. take some time, really write up the story, and see if chewie and company will put it here for others to see. it might be cathartic for you, and i'm sure it would benefit others.

just an idea.

It's been a long time since I've posted in my introduction thread. 437 days ago I quit because a good friend and colleague was just diagnosed with stomach cancer. He gutted Grizzly. He is now 45 years old. He won't see 46. He probably won't see Thanksgiving. I have spared ya'll the sickening details of his treatment. I just got word yesterday that after a year plus of incredible torture they are throwing in the towel. Several operations. Several rounds of chemo. Radiation that felt like someone was blowtorching your guts from the inside out. Experimental crap. No feelings left in fingers or toes. He started out weighing 250 lbs and is down to 140 lbs. Hasn't eaten solid food for a long, long time.

For those of you reading this and thinking about drumming up enough courage to "try" to quit - do you really want to take the chance? Ya, you probably won't get cancer. I sure pray you don't win the cancer lotto like my buddy. Try explaining that one to your spouse and kids - "I am selfish and took a gamble and lost so you won't have a husband/wife/Daddy/Mommy anymore". Just grow a pair and dump that shit. Quit paying the tobacco industry to slowy kill you. Dumbass.

Sad thing is my buddy's cancer has saved my life. Even if I would never have gotten cancer. Freedom from nicotine addiction is a life saver. It took his life for me to stop being a dumbass. Never again. Not once.
Sorry for your friend bro..I'm the same age, so it really hits home. I quit with you and your buddy.. Never again..

No need to sweat tomorrow or forever. You just focus on keeping your word for today and we'll deal with tomorrow when that sum bitch gets here. Today is a mighty fine day to be quit, so I'm pulling up a chair and quitting with NDY, who's decided he'd like some of the freedom we're offering in here.

To all of you who've just joined today, make it your mission to read all you can here this weekend. It will keep your mind off the cravings and educate you for future battles.

If I can do this, you can do this. Good to be quit with you. Yell if you need anything.
297 days later this is still sound advice from Gspot. Enjoying my freedom every day. If you think about it, only today really matters. Enjoy it without withdrawals.
Great job on your journey.
