Would it help the quitter by switching over to nicotine free tobacco instead of quitting cold turkey on the real stuff? The tobacco companies could have came out with this a long time ago but they know they would loose customers in the long run because it would have made it easier for their customers to realize how stupid it is to put shit in their mouth. Having shit in your mouth is just a small part of the addiction, nicotine is what gets people hooked. I think it would be a great idea and i would be their first customer, it sure would be better than that fake ass shit they have out now and it sure would be easier to quit tobacco without nicotine anyday.
tobacco has its own set of problems.. namely it is what has the cancer causing agents in it. The reason you are addicted to it is the Nicotine. Take the Nicotine out and you still have the risk associated with tobacco.

There are many tobacco free substitues out there, you just have to find the one that works for you. I ended up mixing a couple of fakes together and got the blend I was looking for.
well I'm not saying to continue using tobacco but use the nicotine free tobacco to quit just like some people use the fake stuff to help in their quit.
Maybe I am missing what you are trying to say. I am old and do not grap shit like I should. Nicotine free tobacco is tobacco ! What am I missing? I said there are a ton of alternatives out there, just find one that works for you.

Nicotine is the addictive property in tobacco. Tobacco by itself if not addictive, however the cancer causing properties are in tobacco not nicotine... so you can see it is a double edged sword.

My advice to you is to find a fake that fills your need. Use that to get yourself off the NIC and then gradually you will get off the fake. Without NIC there is no need for tobacco.
All i am saying is that it would be easier to quit nicotine free tobacco than the fake crap they have out now..Instead of mimicking it with herbs and so on you would be able to actually use tobacco in the ingredients but without the addictive nicotine. I dont know how i can make it any simpler than that. Sure it would have the cancer causing crap in it but it would hell of a lot easier to quit.

I didnt quit because of health reasons hell that was the last thing on my mind, i quit because i was a slave to nicotine. It doesnt matter anyway, you will never see nicotine free tobacco on the market..

"CLOSE THE DOOR. In my opinion, it?s the single most important step in your final quit. There is one moment, THE moment, when you finally let go and surrender to the quit. After that moment, no temptation will be great enough, no lie persuasive enough to make you commit suicide by using tobacco."

From a medical standpoint, it is not the nicotine that causes the cancer, it is all of the other chemicals within the tobacco that does that.  Nicotine is a drug - an addictive drug  - and is used regularly in the medical field in safe and therapeutic ways.  Tobacco on the other hand, is a drug BECAUSE of the nicotine, but is not used in medical treatment because it is also responsible for causing cancer.

Take the nic out of tobacco and it is no longer a drug, yet it will still cause cancer and kill you.  And if they tell you they take all the cancer causing elements out of tobacco, they are either liars or it isn't tobacco.

Fake dip can be helpful in dealing with the physical need of a pinch that, to some (I find myself among these), is a large part of the addiction - the oral fixation.  People use seeds, fake dip, candy, mints and all sorts of other things to help get over the need to have something in their mouth.  In my opinion, as long as it isn't something that is going to kill you and doesn't have nic, it should be looked at as a positive thing.  But remember, over use of candy can result in diabetes, overeating can lead to obesity and heart disease and diabetes.  Moderation is a good thing.
My issue with herbal is this - if I continue to mimic the same behavior what is to prevent me from progressing just a little further into the "real" thing? For instance, being a recovering alcoholic I avoid NA beers. Why not drink an NA? After all, it is the alcohol, or rather the effects of that alcohol on my state of being that I am addicted to. However, I tried NA once upon a time and I found myself pounding them. I had a six pack and pounded them inside of two hours....why?

Not sure but I guarantee it was not healthy.

When I first bought the herbal chew, I was Pavlovian in my reaction to the entire ritual of putting in a mint chew. From the sliding my finger nail through the paper and under the lid to open it to the pack to the process I use to place it (hold the lip out with the pinkie and use the others to slide it in) to the wiping of the hands it was giddy with anticipation. Then, throughout the day, I found myself acting just like I did with real chew. Spit one out, throw in another. Spit one out, throw in another.........etc..

Then I ran out......talk about pissed. I might as well have run out of real chew with how I reacted. Threw a tantrum like a little kid.

I am not trying to argue that one position is correct and the other incorrect I just want folks to know, especially newbies, that it might not be for everyone.
I absolutely agree with you on this...what works for me isn't necessarily the right thing for you (or another quitter). My original point was to the specific post about "nicotine-free tobacco." There is, in no way, a benefit from using tobacco simply because it doesn't have nicotine.
OK.. my .02 on the fake..

I used it quite a bit during my first 60-80 days. Certainly did not dip it like I did the real thing but it sure helped me make it through some of the early craves, freaking out etc. I would have a couple of "fake" dips a day. The hardest one for me to get rid of was the late evening after dinner dip. I have not used fake in 3 weeks or so now, just got tired of it.

I say if it helps you to get over the real stuff then use it. In the beginning focus only on staying quit !! You can stop the fake, you can drop the pounds etc but you are not always guaranteed to be able to quit again.
what i've learned....

The oral fixation thing isn't as straight forward as you think... I used to always tell myself, "it's not just the nicotine, it's the pleasure of the dip itself. if i could find dip that felt/tasted just like real dip, i'd quit in a heartbeat. It's just that the fake stuff sucks too much".... I call BS (on myself at least)

If you read up on addictionology, you learn how your brain makes very strong connections to your addiction and your actions...Similar to how a certain smell or even sounds can vividly take you back to a childhood memory. You don't really like the oral fixation. Your brain tells you that you like it, because your brain wants you to like it, so it can get nic... make sense? This is why, for most people, they find their usage of fake shit goes down a lot as time progresses..... Once you start using that fake stuff, and your brain realizes it no longer brings nic, it doesn't really care about the oral fixation part. You're basically re-programming your brain with the fake stuff to break the connection of "dip in lip" = "nic in blood", and replace it with "dip in lip" = "jack shit"
I am one that is in favor of reprogramming the brain from "something in lip" = "good" to "something in lip" = "bad" and "nothing in lip" = "good"

I don't ever want to be tempted to put anything in my lip again, period. It's not normal and I can't think of any other valid reason to put something between the cheek and gum.

My issue with herbal is this - if I continue to mimic the same behavior what is to prevent me from progressing just a little further into the "real" thing? ...
