After an awful Day 3, Day 4 was relatively easy. I worked a 30h shift and had only a few cravings. The few cravings was a direct result of it being a very busy shift, with barely any time to eat. Makes me appreciate how important it is for me to keep busy, keep my mind occupied with something that's stimulating and avoid triggers. I am still new to experiencing triggers and I imagine I will find some as I progress through my quit, but for now I know 100% that my triggers are 1) evening time, 2) watching baseball, and 3) studying. Like an idiot, I used dip to help me study (even though my studying was never truly as focused as it was without dip) and now strongly associate studying with dipping. I need to continue studying as I progress through residency, so I'm going to need to come up with new environments / study groups in order to get my studying. I know that I'll need to study outside of my apartment - there is a smokeshop half a block from my apartment... I'll be monitoring my feelings and will have my december and other KTC brothers on my phone at the ready.

Keep rocking the quit Doc.....It gets better and the freedom from the Nic B**** is awesome. It is so cool to not have to remember to grab a can or worry about when you can sneak that dip and you have the idea, ODAAT and you can't fail.
^^^Menace knows what he's talking about here. Just wait till you start noticing how good freedom actually feels! It's subtle at first- but it just keeps getting better in the big picture. Only catch is you have to earn it, today. Then tomorrow decide if you are up for another taste of it. I'll be quitting with you each day you decide to take it on. Be sure to keep getting numbers for support.

Keep adding more days. Proud of your quit. Just know that you will have shitty days ahead. Every time that you over come one of those days, then the next one is a little easier. There is light at the end of the tunnel. ODAAT

There are a number of healthcare professionals on this site, ranging from doctors, to pharmacists, to dentists, to nurses, and paramedics and as sick as it sounds, I always find it refreshing when another one of us joins the likes of KTC. I feel like there is an added sense of irony for us, because on paper, you would think we would know better. I'm of the licensed drug dealing profession and knowing the line of work we all contribute to is the perfect breeding ground for nicotine addiction. High stress, long hours, and sometimes mundane work that requires another fixation to occupy the time. Basically medical work is like a sweaty ass, the perfect breeding ground for fungal infection, the same way our lifestyle is a breeding ground for addiction.

The good news my friend, all of that is a complete load of bullshit. One thing I've learned is that no matter the walk of life we come from, nicotine and addiction doesn't give a fuck. We're all perfect breeding grounds for addiction. So all that stress and addict beliefs that you need dip to get through your day is a load of shit. I have been quit for almost 9 months and every aspect of my life is better and more fulfilling now that I have realized I can succeed in all those facets without a piece of turd in my lower lip. Buy into this program, embrace it, and make it a way of life. Start by posting roll and building accountability. I promise you, quitting dip will feel better than any academic achievement you've ever obtained. Not to mention a few friends for life you'll gain along the way. It won't be easy, but I would expect someone like yourself to be ready for this at all costs.

Look forward to seeing you on roll.
Thanks Steakbomb. It's like a dirty little secret isn't it? A health care professional delivering medical care in some form or another - devoting huge amounts of their working hours to promote the health of the community they live in - sneaking off to dark corners to chew tobacco. Addiction (which I'm really just learning about now) is far more complicated than I had imagined. The added irony is that we should know better - we learn about the dangerous side effects of nicotine, we SEE people who have had massive head and neck surgeries to remove tumors, or people dying in their beds, emaciated and bald from chemo, and we think to ourselves "won't happen to me". WTF.

I was very pleased that I posted roll call today. I made it through one of the shittiest nights of memory, not able to fall asleep, heart racing, sweating, nauseated. I woke up and knew I could share with my december brothers and sisters that I kept my promise, that I'm serious about quitting, and knowing that even though it was a terrible night, I could do it again if it brought me closer to stopping dip.

I quit with you today.

To everyone posting on my intro today - thank you. It nearly brought me to tears knowing I have so many people behind me. I had such an awful day today, coming off about 45minutes of sleep and had a busy, no-time-for-a-bathroom-break, type of day. Walking home and see all these wonderful people cheering me on and supporting me - it makes me feel great. It also makes me feel that the promise I made to stay quit today wasn't just to people "out there", it made it much more personal. I promised I could get through today without nicotine, and I'm going to keep that promise.

ODAAT
I quit with you all today.

I think it is wonderful that you are going to set the example for your patients. When a patient is told the health risks of being overweight, unhealthy lifestyle, ect. it tends to be less effective when they smell the stench of chew on you. LOL You can do anything you set your mind to do. You control your destiny. The most important thing we do here is post our promise to our quit brothers that we will not use nicotine in any form for today only. We honor our promise for the day. God willing we wake up the next day we repeat the process. I would tell you good luck but we don't believe in luck. We choose to be quit everyday. You can make that choice as well and will have thousands of quitters on this site that have your back. Welcome.
Thank you Ron, it's great to know I have so much support here. I already have 3 numbers to call in case I'm in trouble. I'm getting into the toughest part of Day 3 for me (evenings), and it's great to know I have people here who have my back, and numbers that I can call in case I need emergent help. I promised I would be quit today, and I know I can do today. ODAAT.
