There is an old saying in AA: " Time takes time".

Kind of like weight loss, you didn't gain the weight over nite. Your recovery will not happen overnite either. Every day that you are quit is a victory. You must be vigilant with your commitment every day, hour and/or minute. Whatever works for you. It has worked for so many and most of all, don't ever stop asking for help and insight. ;)

Hang in there, bro! It will get better. Everybody is different. Some shake off the side effects early, others take a long time. The stuff you are dealing with right now should begin to lighten up within the first week. But beware, after that is when it gets tricky. A few days of gung-ho "I got this!" will be immediately be followed by a day of raw emotion that will try to drive you back to the can. Be ready for that. Get cocky in your quit at any point, and you leave yourself open to fall in the trap of "I can have just one.". None of us can have JUST ONE. Bottom line: once this initial funk clears, you'll be all over the board for a while. Let me know if I can help.

Cancrusher's Guide to Dealing with Symptoms of Nicotine Withdrawal

Step 1: Face

Face the fact that this is going to suck...bad.

Step 2: Accept

Accept that there is little you can do to make the pain subside completely.

Step 3: Float

Float through the fog and headaches, paying little attention to the severity of the pain because you know it will eventually pass.

Step 4: Let time pass

In the world of Quitting, Time is the ultimate healer. Simply allow the time to pass. It is going to with or without your constant supervision.

Focus on the rage....the rage is what got me through it. Turn it around on your addicition, your weakness. Get mad dog mean and keep your head down and plow through it.

Good luck buddy, it was the right decision.

Peyton, it will get better man for sure but it's going to take some TIME! Sorry, there is no easy way around this. You're going to come out of this major suck in a couple of weeks and then it's going to be a mental grind for awhile. I'm day 159 today and I can finally say that for the last couple weeks I have pretty much been fine, very few cravings, loving life without being controlled. My best advice here is make your daily commitment and don't worry about day 20, or 40, etc worry about today. Stay quit today, wake up tomorrow and repeat. One day at a time is the only way to take this on. Also, know that you will NEVER have to go thru this again, quit for good, for life and this is the only time you will ever have to experience the horrible suck. Remember how bad you feel right now, never forget even when the bitch is trying to lure you back because well, you've gone this long you deserve one right? Wrong, it will happen man, just embrace how you feel and remember it.

Hey Peyton,

Met you in chat last night. Glad you are here. The physical withdrawal from nicotine last approximately 72 hours. Things get better after that. I was on edge for about 3 weeks total. Irritable, fog, etc. Here are some good links for symptoms. http://killthecan.org/yourquit/what.asp
http://killthecan.org/yourquit/symptoms.asp

Remember this crap. This is a reminder of why you never want to put nicotine in your system again. Something that makes you feel this terrible when you do not use it can't be good for you can it?

Ask as many questions as necessary. Others can learn from what you are going through as well.

On Day 3 of the quit. I found myself spending most of this morning talking myself out of either punching my boss in the face or putting my head through the computer screen. I am typically a pretty laid back dude, and feel like I'm having an out of body experience right now.

Please someone tell me that this will lighten up soon. I didn't expect this to be easy, and I know I'm fucking dominate this thing .... But, I just need to see some light at the end of the tunnel.

Its so delicious I don't taste any of the dozen of poisons! Wow...thanks UST!

Got to get angry man. We all bought into a gigantic marketing scheme using a chemical that WILL kill each of us after repeated exposure. We've been made fools while our lives the ones around us suffer and a giant machine makes a profit. Its complete fucking bullshit. We're smarter than that. Get angry. Plow through the shitty period and get quit. One day at a time.

I don't know what pisses me off more, a giant company making a profit on selling poison to people or the fact that our government allows it.

I am a big personal responsibility guy myself.

It is our own fault that we bought in to the scheme. There is no one else to blame but the person in the mirror for making that choice.

It is also our responsibility to quit.

We all start by posting roll every morning. And then making the responsible choice.

Freedman, A, “Juiced up: How a tobacco giant doctors snuff brands to boost their ‘kick,’” Wall Street Journal, October 26, 1994 [quoting former UST sales representative].

At 38 after 25 years of chewing Copenhagen I looked in the mirror and said "Soul, its time to stop killing yourself". I didn't say that at 13 and I would argue a 13 year old doesn't understand the notion of how dangerous addiction is or why someone would knowingly give them poison.

Peyton,

just FYI, folks here jump on certain words and mentalities. they are trying to eliminate the vocabulary of an addict and the mentality of a caver from the rest of us that are new to the site. it's tough love, but for those that are truly invested in quitting, it is definitely genuine.

post roll every day as your promise to be nic free for that day. then keep your word to the rest of us. use this site to rage, to ask for help, to seek workarounds/solutions/tricks, etc. there's a ton of information here, and there are a ton of successful quitters. everyone will tell you posting roll is vital.

let me know how i can help... proud to be quit with you.

I appreciate all of the encouragement. And Rad, didn't mean to insult you. It was a poor choice of word on my part.

I wish I could go back and find my 18 year self who first started dipping and bash his fucking face in right now. Might be time for some fresh air.
