One of the biggest lessons I learned early on was that I had a license to do damn near any and everything necessary to quit (short of smoking crack, etc.). I've gone through at leastt 5 different addictions in the past 3 months from gum, seeds, coffee, candy, and exercise. Now I'm down to the exercise, candy, and coffee. Do I want to eventually wittle the list to just exercise? Of course. But the point is that none of my 3 current addictions will give me cancer, and more importantly none of them control my life.
