Thanks everyone! As i look around this site more and more it seems so familiar. I read the BLUESMAN writeup and it is awesome. I have started to get a little weird already. Just got back from the gas station with seeds, chips, 4 packs of gum. Shit this is already hard. Tomorrow has to be better.

I've told my good friends, girlfriend, and coworkers that i'm quiting. Trying to set the stage so i will look like an asshole if i don't make it. I really want to make it. I will make it.
It's great to have you here Tom. Thanks for letting me know you came over from Mossy Oak. I am thrilled you have made this step. Now we , yes we, have to follow through. It was indeed your decision to quit, but all of here are involved in your success. We will do anything we can to make it happen. We can exchange numbers, personal messages, chat, whatever you need, that's why we are here. Hopefully you explained to those around you that you might not be an enjoyable person for a while. At least until you get the nicotine out of your system. And hopefully they will support you wholey in this. I know we will.

How did you guys get over the worst first few days?  Gum, seeds, food?
Besides chewing a lot of gum and eating more than I should, I drank lots of water. This not only helps to flush out your system, but it also keeps you occupied by having to go pee every 5 minutes.
sheer determination...and seeds.
the bottom line is this tom -- do ANYTHING and EVERYTHING in your power to keep dip out of your mouth.

if it means that you need to use fake chew -- do it.
if it means you need to eat -- do it.
if it means you need to suck on something -- do it.

you #1 job right now is to GET and STAY quit... you've taken the first HUGE step -- you're on the site. you've introduced yourself and you've taken responsibility for your actions.

let us help -- we know what you're going through.

dipping or no is a decision... you've made your decision today... make the same one tomorrow, and the day after that...

i'm not going to wish you good luck -- luck has nothing to do with a successful quit -- you have to make a decision...

THE DECISION

Quitting dip comes down to one thing... a decision to quit.  I can't spell it out any simpler than that.  Sure, it's much easier for me to say that today now that I've quit than it would have been on day 1 or day 10, but every day that goes by, I believe it more and more.

I'm not here to tell you that the decision is easy to make because it's certainly not.  There are some days when the decision is downright nearly impossible to make.  But it's a decision that needs to be made no a daily basis.

There are many things in our lives and in our quits that we have no control over.  We can't control the weather, we can't control how people view us, we can't control what happens at the office, we can't control whether we are sick.  In our quits, we can't control the withdrawal that we go through, we can't control WHAT symptoms we'll experience nor can we control how long those symptoms persist.

To look at it that way doesn't look good.  But remember... the decision.

You can DECIDE to put a dip in.
You can DECIDE to NOT put a dip in.
You can DECIDE whether you want to continue to be a slave to the can.
You can DECIDE to LIVE your life WITHOUT dip.

I've had conversations with other quitters and cavers.  I've been asked what makes me different (than someone who's struggling).  The answer is simple... I made my decision.  I'm not any stronger, I'm not any better and quite frankly I'm not any different.  I'm an addict just like all of you... I made my decision.  I made my decision this morning just like I have every morning since July 24th.  I'll make a decision tomorrow as well.

When you're thinking that quitting isn't possible... when you're thinking that everything is out of your control and you NEED your dip... make a decision.

You're in a place where people can help you once you're made your decision but we can't make it for you.  We're here to help.

DECIDE to let us help.
DECIDE to not dip today.
DECIDE to live life WITHOUT dip or chew.
DECIDE to live.

This thing is simple -- it's decision time my friend...

Cool. I think i have it figured out. I'm 30 years old and live here in Kansas City. I'm an attorney and avid outdoorsman. I chew at work (in my office) in the car, on the tractor, in the deer stand, etc. I have attempted to quit before without much luck. Now i'm ready. It's getting to the point where chewing isn't even fun anymore.

I just ordered a few cans of the mint chew and another (can't remember the name). I hope they arrive soon to start getting something in my mouth for the mental factor. Right now it's gum... Well, glad to be here and really hope this helps, for support if nothing else.

Proverbs 18:2

"A fool takes no pleasure in understanding, but only in expressing his opinion."

A Quit Plan: Do you have one?

CLOSE THE DOOR. In my opinion, it?s the single most important step in your final quit. There is one moment, THE moment, when you finally let go and surrender to the quit.
After that moment, no temptation will be great enough, no lie persuasive enough to make you commit suicide by using tobacco. SportDad 1/13/05
