Cigarette giant rolls out new tobacco products
By RICHARD CRAVER

Associated Press

October 12, 2008 04:11 pm

— Cigarette giant R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. is introducing three dissolvable smokeless products in its latest bid to make tobacco more accessible in a society that’s clamping down on smoking.
The dissolvable products -- a pellet (Camel Orbs), a twisted stick the size of a toothpick (Camel Sticks) and a film strip for the tongue (Camel Strips) -- had their debut at last weekÂ’s National Association of Convenience Stores convention.
The products drew criticism from the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, which has protested most Reynolds tobacco innovations in recent years.
“These products are flavored and packaged like candy, and very likely will appeal to children,” said Matthew Myers, president of the advocacy group.
Company spokeswoman Maura Payne said that the products are sold in child-resistant packaging. Only adult consumers will be able to buy the products, and they will carry the same health warnings as other oral smokeless products.
“These products appear to be part of a continuing effort by RJR and other tobacco companies to get around the growing number of smoke-free laws and give smokers new ways to sustain their addiction in places they cannot smoke,” Myers said.
The products are made of finely milled tobacco and come in the flavor styles of fresh and mellow, Payne said. The products last from two to three minutes for the strips, 10 to 15 minutes for the orbs and 20 to 30 minutes for the sticks.
“We’re meeting the adult tobacco consumer where they are in society today,” Payne said. “Consumer research has found that adult tobacco consumers have wanted another option for using tobacco where it wasn’t comfortable or they weren’t permitted to smoke.”
Reynolds said it is the first major U.S. tobacco manufacturer to offer the products. Star Scientific Inc., a smaller manufacturer in Petersburg, Va., has been selling its dissolvable tobacco products -- Ariva and Stonewall -- in select regional and national chains such as Food Lion and 7-Eleven.
Reynolds plans to test the new products in Indianapolis; Columbus, Ohio; and Portland, Ore. The orbs and sticks products will have their debut in January and the strips in the second quarter.
Although Reynolds does not dictate retail prices, the company said that the dissolvable products should sell at a comparable price to a tin of Camel Snus, which is between $4 and $4.50.
Bill Godshall, executive director of SmokeFree Pennsylvania, said that Reynolds is probably trying to introduce its new smokeless products before potential Food and Drug Administration regulation stamps out most innovation.“I’m pleased that Reynolds is being aggressive in accelerating the switch to smokeless tobacco and getting more products that are likely to appeal to tobacco users,” Godshall said.
In the past nine years, Reynolds has expanded its flagship brand Camel through such introductions as Camel Exotic Blends, Camel No. 9 and Camel Signature. It has branched out with Camel Snus, a smokeless product that is being promoted as the industryÂ’s best bet in a post-smoking environment.

This really pisses me off !

RITUALS - So I know I have been MIA but I am still NIC free and pluggin along. I think for a bit coming in each day was having me focus to much on DIP or the fact I don't have any. Lately I feel like I am missing the Rituals associated with the habit and need suggestions, advice etc.... on how to fill the void.

Thanks,

abouttime487
well... if you're missing the ritual and you don't think it will send you back to the can, by all means get some herbal chew to tide you over. some may frown on this approach but i've always said i'd rather chew a can/day of herbal for the rest of my days than ever have another dip of kodiak.

as for rituals... make posting HERE one of your rituals.

i've heard it said many times, "the only time i think about dip is when i'm at that site... i guess i'll step away from the site so i don't think about dip."

that my friend is a mistake. invariably those people come back with a "i thought i could have just one" story and post a day 1. here's the unfortunate reality of the situation... you're an addict. sorry to break it to you but it's the truth. you'll always be an addict. the sooner you realize that the better.

ok, now that that's behind us let's deal with the "thinking about dip" piece of the equation. i post roll every day cause i WANT to remember my life as a dipper. i WANT to remember how damn difficult it was to quit. i WANT to keep picking at that scab. maybe it seems a little masochistic but the bottom line is this... if i don't forget, then i'm NEVER going to go back to the can. it's too tough. i did it once and i'm not going to put myself in that position again... ever.

hang in there my man... you did the right thing. you reached out.

props to you!

Marines invent energy-boosting smokeless tobacco

By Ian B. Murphy - GateHouse News Service

Lexington, Mass. —

A Lexington marine who joined the corps at 30 has created a new tobacco product to keep on-duty soldiers alert.

Cpl. Matthew Doran, 34, along with his friend Cpl. Steven Rundel, 26, created Revved Up, a new smokeless tobacco infused with energy elements, similar to Red Bull.

Doran said the inspiration for Revved Up came to them while waiting in line at a base convenience store where they are stationed in Beaufort, S.C. While in line, Doran commented on a smokeless tobacco contained that labeled itself as waterproof, and featured a woman in a bathing suit on the cover.

Doran turned to Rundel and said, “What’s next, energy dip?”

He said as soon as it came out of his mouth, they knew it was a Eureka moment.

“There were two marines in line [in front of us] with energy drinks and smokeless tobacco, and we said, ‘this all makes too much sense,’” Doran said.

The two marines went back to their bunks and called a patent attorney. One hour and $75 dollars later, they had a provisional patent.

After unsuccessfully pitching the idea to the CEO of U.S. Tobacco, Doran and Rundel posted the idea to an Internet forum for smokeless tobacco users.

“Within four hours of the post we were contacted by someone from the tobacco industry, and we knew we had something,” Doran said.

Doran liquidated his cleaning business and financed a trip to a tobacco trade show in Las Vegas, where he met a tobacco businessman, Soo Baek. Baek connected the marines with Southern Smokeless Tobacco Company, out of Statesboro, Ga., and Doran said they hope to unveil the product next month.

He said Revved Up has been well received by the smokeless tobacco users at his base. He recognizes the health risks in using smokeless tobacco, and said his product is not to get people to start using.

“We do not look at it as trying to convert people to chew tobacco,” Doran said. “What we’re doing is giving our fellow troops … when they’re in combat, they’re doing it anyways because they’re not smoking as much. We’re giving them a better product that will keep them more alert, and may ultimately save their lives. They need this, and they want this.”

Doran said his product has 65 percent less carcinogens when compared to other smokeless tobacco, something he considers one of Revved UpÂ’s biggest selling points.

Revved Up and Doran made the front page of the Sept. 15 edition of the Marine Corps Times. The article graces the same page as stories about tattoos, rocket launchers, and the CorpsÂ’ plans for a new squad automatic weapon.

Doran joined the Marines at 30 years old; he had to get a major to sign off on his recruitment because of his age. Doran, a Lexington High School graduate, said he was searching for something in his life, and found it in the Marine Corps.

“It’s the best thing I’ve ever done in my entire life,” Doran said. “The marine corps is the best organization; they have the best fundamentals, leadership qualities, and discipline they could instill on everybody. I know it’s a tough organization, but you can’t learn this stuff anywhere but the Marine Corps. I’d recommend it to anybody.”

DoranÂ’s brother, Mike, said he was apprehensive at first about his brother joining the Marine Corps, but now that heÂ’s seen the results, he couldnÂ’t be happier.

“When he first said he was going to do it, I was shocked,” Mike Doran said. “Since he’s done it, I think it’s been the best thing in the world for him. He wanted to start a new career for himself, and the marines offered him that training.”

Doran is stationed on an air base; he works on the forward-looking infrared, or FLIR, laser systems on F-18 jets that help in targeting and radar.

“I think it’s the coolest job ever,” Doran said.
