I wish they could have cut or removed the chewing from that movie, I don't want any kids to think that because this hero chewed, they can.
Proud to quit with you Snipe, get active, read up, it is time to never look back.
I read the book too. In that, he failed a shoot at sniper school and realized the next day he didn't have a dip in. He put one in and passed with flying colors. Just an illustration on how trapped we all were by that Nic. It had a powerful hold on our minds. We all know that it has nothing to do physically with how we perform. He was told to quit by doctors incessantly because of his high blood pressure. Classic Nic addict stuff. So glad we are all free now!
Yeah - it's amazing how once we come to terms with the fact that we are nicotine addicts (or addicts of anything really) that anytime I hear or read "addict speak" it might as well be in flashing neon. I remember once telling someone totally seriously that dipping helped me break 80 golfing! What an idiot I was.

Idaho - to your comment about kids seeing him dip. I will say that because of our past dipping lives we are trained to spot anyone dipping, I know I can spot it a mile away. I doubt non-dippers will pick up on the dippng in the movie as much as I did.
Lighty, you are so right.
I can spot a can in someones pocket a mile away, I point out 'ninja dipper's to my wife all the time, this morning at daycare saw in the parking lot someone threw out their chew on the ground, to a normal person maybe dirt? It ruled my life for so long. I played college sports and I had to drink twice the water of a normal person just to make up for chewing....

Sorry to blow up your intro Snipe, proud to quit with you!

No worries on the intro!

But I do worry about the slippery slope of policing movies and society. A lot of alcoholics would ban all drinking in movies. Personally I think it is time to make tobacco illegal but it is a part of our culture and as such we have to come face to face with it sometimes. But all your points are valid about the way we deceive ourselves into thinking that dipping is helping us somehow. I own a construction company here in New York. Occasionally I will get out of the office and hop on a machine. I will need to be clean for a while to get past that trigger. Hop on a machine throw in a dip. Luckily I don't have to get on one for a while.

I think I took a left turn here. Sorry.
And can someone show me how to highlight and box out quoted text?

Don't you hate old people...

A little off topic, sure, but I can say first hand, dipping, the military, and specifically the sniping community are all one big happy family.

I spent three years in Recon as a Sniper, and we learned in Sniper School that if you dip, dip when you shoot. It went further than that, though. They also taught us that if you drink coffee, drink before you shoot. Eat breakfast? Eat the same breakfast.

The point is, at those long ranges, a millimeter makes the difference in a hit or miss. You shouldn't take the chance of your body not having the same amount of (fill in the blank) before you take a shot. Of course, this was all range shooting.

That being said, we all dipped. Like it was our job.

I haven't, nor will I see this movie, but I did watch Generation Kill. AT least a part of it. That was my old unit, and I didn't like the way they portrayed everyone dipping in that, either. It's irrelevant to the story, IMO.

Now, about this new guy....Mft...you gotta up your game, bro. You're not consistent with roll. You need to be ALL IN on this one, my man.
What is your major malfunction?!?!?!?!

Funny - I saw American Sniper recently as well. I am 256 days quit and it was the 1st movie I'd seen without dip in 20+ years! Non-nicotine addicts don't understand that a dark movie theatre is the perfect place for a nicotine fiend to feed their addiction for 2+ hours straight!

It was nice irony that my 1st dip free had the hero dipping the whole movie. But guess what - I survived and actually enjoyed a movie without dip.

My advice is to read as much on this site as you can. What you will find is that we are all basically the same and have gone through or are going through the same shit you are right now. The bottom line is that if you get involved with this site and use the tools you can do this.

Post roll every day - I am going to as well and I'll quit with you every damn day.

Lighty

Congrats on a great choice, Sniper! It doesn't matter how much you dipped, or how long. The one truth we're all facing is that we're addicts. Before I quit, I made up my own status..."light dipper." I took small dips and didn't leave them in very long. In my poisoned mind, I rationalized that this made sense?!! 'Crazy' (although...3-4 cans a day?!! Your jaw must look like a catcher's mitt?!!)

But back to my point, Snipe...addiction is addiction. I can't tell you exactly when I became an addict...maybe right from the start? I don't know. But I can tell you when I decided to man-up and take account of myself and my choices...it was when I posted roll today.

Quitting is done ONE DAY AT A TIME. It is a daily opportunity to call your own shot and kick the Nic Bitch in the nuts. When you post roll, you are giving us your word that you will not have any nicotine today...and just for today. Don't think about tomorrow, next week, next year or whatever...just today. We'll deal with the rest when it gets here. Congrats on posting roll. Now all you have to do is fight to keep it. Fight like your life is on the line...because it is.

YOU GOT THIS!

Quit with you MTF. Havent seen the movie yet but I know just what you mean.

You can do this, we are with you. I was up to 2 cans of Grizz or Kodiac / day at the end. I thought my life would could never get back on track without dip. I was so wrong, BUT, it took a while for to realize the truth. I did not need nicotine to enjoy life. And neither do you. It is all a bullshit lie. Addiction is a tough beast to get your hand around. You have come to the right place.

One day at a time friend. We have your back.
