Hello all,

My name is Tony, I'm 28, and today is the day I've decided to throw down the can for good! No more bullshit excuses, "relapses", etc-NONE of it! For the last 11 years my habit consisted of 1 can of Skoal Fine cut every day, and now I'm starting to pay the price for it with my health.

About 2 weeks ago I had a huge scare and I ultimately ended up in the emergency room because of chest pains and trouble breathing. During that whole ordeal, the doctor basically told me that I had no other choice than to quit. Despite the fact that my blood pressure was dangerously high. it turned out to be nothing cardiac, so they sent me home. Chest pains were apparently caused by an anxiety attack related to stress.

About 2 days later, I followed up with my normal doctor, and he did a full physical exam. As he was looking into my mouth, he noticed white patches starting to form on my lower gums, inner lip and under the right side of my tongue. The doctor told me he didnt believe that I was in any imminent danger of having mouth cancer, but reinforced the fact that I was to quit dipping immediately.

So, here I am. I found this website by doing a Google search, and it seems like a great support network. I think with a little time, hard candy, nicotine patches, and plenty of support from my friends, family, and of course, folks on this website-I can beat this habit down. Due to the fact that I've had an intense fear of the dentist the last several years (thanks to the dip habit), my oral health has probably gone to the shitter. Within the next few weeks, I plan to see a dentist and get a professional deep cleaning and oral cancer evaluation.
Welcome. I will echo what rooster has said and you've recognized, get the word try out of your vocab.

Also, be careful with the patches. Your addiction is to nicotine and in my humble opinion all the patch is going to do is change the delivery. I suggest putting your head down and trudging into a cold turkey suck of a quit. But I also understand that the patch has statistical proof that it can work for some so do what you need to quit. But be prepared for mixed opinions on it from this community. As far as roll call goes, if you don't follow the patch program to the letter, don't post roll.

No matter what path you choose on this, this quitting thing can be done. We are all proof of that.
I didn't read thoroughly and catch the part about the patches. _ Bummed.

Done is done.  I am done and it really helps me stay done seeing other people stay done. So We done quit.  congradulations.  We are done with the dip, lets do something else.  How about chop some trees down?    I like to play lumberjack.
Sounds fun Ricko! Shooting beer cans or watermelons is another idea....

Thanks for the input. My whole thing with the patches is that I personally feel that it's a safer way of getting nicotine as opposed to having a huge wad of Skoal dirt which contains god knows what kind of chemicals/cancer causing agents. I'm on the step one patch now, and in two weeks, I might sneak down to the next level or just go cold turkey. I completely understand that folks may have mixed opinions on the matter, and while I may not agree-I certainly respect that.

As far as roll call and the program goes, I'm totally holding myself accountable to quitting. No and's, if's, but's about it! I just found a new white patch under my tongue this morning, and it scared the living crap out of me. My skoal can days are over!

My suggestions is: first off - no gonna try like your header states-- You are going to do this!

Next sign into roll call with the May group..got some strong quit in there, talk to some of the members via pm (just click on their name above the advatar), ask for their  phone numbers so you can lean on them when the nic bitch starts messing with you-- espoecially during the first several days..she is a real bitch.  come to your May place (and others in this board) and vent your rage cuz you will feel it and better to take it out here than against family at home... it ain't their fault you decided to chew.
Make a plan on what your going to do when the triggers hit...weekends are extremely bad for triggers for many.  spit seeds, drink lots of water, sugarless gum are some parts of plans..staying close to the board is another, texting or calling is another, copy off the contract to quit and carry that in your wallet and if you want to dip - read it and talk to someone to get permission to sign it.

Good luck with the best decision you ever made.
