i am so tired of waking up between 4-4:30 every damn morning for the last week. It doesn’t seem to matter what day it is. I wake up and my mind is going a 100mph like I have a million things to accomplish that day. Some days I can nod back off but some (like this morning) it wasn’t going to happen. Anyone else struggling with sleep?

Duuuude, Josh. On day 4 man going through the same thing. I've actually tried to quit a hand full of times in the last couple months and it's basically caused me to have to start over every week or so and I've been wondering why I never sleep now. It's the same story. I used to sleep so fuckin good and with all this stop start nonsense, I cant sleep past 2 or 4am on any night. Just sayin I know what your going through. Let's just keep pushing along, never go back, and imagine what great sleep we'll end up with in the future lol.

Josh - glad to see you posted up on roll with your June Quit group!!!

Sleep patterns are definitely screwed early in your quit. You'll have days where you can't sleep enough. You'll have days where you can't sleep at all. My best advice right now is to drink a crapload of water throughout the day, but cut it off early enough you're not up every couple of hours to pee. Exercise before bed. Literally to the point that you wear yourself out. Some guys use sleep aids, but personally I just powered through it this way. I kinda figured the sooner I found my "new normal" the better, and wanted to do it with as few extracurricular aids as possible...

The next best thing I can tell you is to do a bunch of research on the site. Read everything you can and ask questions (just like you did here) any time you're not sure whether or not what's happening is "normal". Odds are, you can blame this for pretty much everything your body is (and isn't) doing... There are a number of links in the top of your groups header that are incredibly helpful. Be sure to revisit them often so you have an idea what's coming. If nothing else, that'll get you prepped so you're not surprised. I'm copying the links here for you as well:

As far as your day count goes, this is what the first link says:

Days 4 through 20 – Here comes the mind games. The nicotine is out of your system now. You will still have some physical things to deal with.
  • Cravings
  • Irritability
  • Insomnia
  • Fatigue
  • Inability to Concentrate
  • Headache
  • Sore throat
  • Constipation, gas, stomach pain
  • Dry mouth
  • Sore tongue and/or gums
Yep, you have this to look forward to. Your brain is rewiring itself. It isn’t used to being in an oxygen rich environment. Your body is responding in kind. Everything is a mind game now. All the cravings you have are actually due to triggers. Triggers are events where you are in a situtation you would normally dip in. Mowing the grass, playing poker online, playing golf, working on the car………you get the picture. Keep drinking water, use seeds, the fake stuff, whatever you need to keep the dip out of your mouth. Remember, oral fixation is part of our habit, something you will eventually need to break. For now though, use all the tools you have.

The good news is that it DOES get better! You CAN get through this!

Fuuuuck, day 2. I knew this would suck and I'm gonna stay strong. Just had my first crave where I let my mind actually go to the store and pick up a can. In the past, when I let me imagination wander to that point, there is nothing stopping me from getting a can. Today, I'll take 5 deep breaths and do a bunch of push ups :) I can get through this. Thanks for all the support on here.

Day 20 on my quit. Jogging on the treadmill helped me with the fog a little. Just had to push through the 7 to 10 days, feeling much better now. Went to the dentist yesterday & I now have clean teeth. This motivates me to stick with my quit. I really want to quit for good this time, no excuses! Anymore ideas to stay motivated would help?

I started my quit today. I wanted to know everyone's thoughts on nicotine gum. As i am a police officer dealing with the initial fog when quitting is going to make my job very difficult.

use the fake chew smokey mountain or baccof.  It worked for me. I chewed the shit out of it for the first 4 months. Now I don't even use it.

Nicotine gum... provides your body nicotine.

This is akin to an alcoholic who's drink of choice is Jack Daniels switching to Miller Lite.

I started my quit today. I wanted to know everyone's thoughts on nicotine gum. As i am a police officer dealing with the initial fog when quitting is going to make my job very difficult.

I have a very close friend that works for a SD in one of the largest counties in the U,S.  We've been friends for 26 years and have dipped together ( hunted, fished, drank whiskey, shot guns, talked shit) all that time. I went cold turkey in Nov 2018 and he has yet to quit but wants to. His response to me was " If I go without nicotine it could get real ugly on the street"  LOL, and it probably would! This guy is former military and is a meat eater.  At age 53 he still is a hard charger.


So the advice to take some time off is not without merit. You are in a high stress job. Mind fog is not an option. Losing your cool is not an option. Dealing with the worst of the worst public assholes is difficult on a perfect day. See if time off is an option. It is worth it.

Yep.  Failing to plan is planning to fail.  You know what?  We have CEOs, lawyers, Cops, and even CADD technicians  :D that have made it thru the suck.  Don't you think a bad ass like you can too?

I'll keep it as real as possible.  We are a no nicotine site.  Everyone on here has quit cold turkey.  By using nic gum, you are only trading the delivery method.  I only approved this message so others may chime in for you. 
Now here comes the part that you will not like...
You are no different than anyone of us.  Your job is not "more stressful" than all of ours.  There are plenty of cops, firemen, lawyers, dr's, accountants... 
Grab your set of balls (if your wife doesn't own them) and post your promise with a Day 1 not to use nicotine.  You have the biggest support group.  Rest assured, you will not get any sympathy here talking about how stressful your life is and now is not the time to quit.

Nicotine replacement therapy DOES NOT WORK. That's a fact. One of my co-workers quit smoking a couple years ago and started on the gum. Now he's on a "really low dosage in a vape" (his words, not mine) that he sucks on constantly. He hasn't quit. He's changed delivery methods.

Take a couple days off if you have to. Go completely nic free, post roll, and post an intro. Solicit advice in the forum and in your intro. As Fish mentioned there are more than a few people on here that will understand your situation and be able to help.
