Working on day 18 of my quit.  Thought I would pop back in and update my introduction...sort of like a running comm log on what this is like.  May not amount to much, but I figure some newbie might find it useful down the road.

trigger is a strong one, but when I got home my mailbox had a God send waiting for me. 6 cans of Hooch classic in my mailbox. I can now say that I have tried (3) alternative chews.

1. That mint stuff from Oregon = felt like my lip was on fire -- about a 1 1/2 minute dip

2. Smokey Mountain: good stuff, just a tad to expensive for me to order consistently

3. Hooch (Its full name is chattahooche, in case a FNG is reading this) = shall be my alter chew of choice from here on out. IMHO its smooth, doesn't have a retarded amount of cayene in it, and its not as sticky as Smokey Mountain.

Insomnia seems to be wearing off a bit, but its still enough of a problem most nights that I am dragging a lot. However, since I changed my diet and have begun exercise the ole fat again I have noticed an improvement. I don't know for sure, but I think another 3 weeks to a month of improved diet and exercise should remedy the sleeping issues.

Hat tip to all the support in here. Accountability + Discipline = Solid Quit.

I did have retarded nic rage about a week to week and a half ago and came across the most cathardic solution. I went to the range and put 50 rounds of .45 ACP into a target. Great afternoon, but I will have to limit that since ammo ain't cheap.

One of the coolest things that I have noticed thus far in my quit is

1. I haven't used a single ant-acid in 18 days
2. I calculated that no more chew will = $112/month towards debt payoff which will expedite a loan payoff by 3 months.
3. Blood pressure has dropped

One of the things that I have learned and been mentored on thus far is to cut out/off all alcohol consumption with friends that still chew for some time. I damn near ruined my quit by going out for a night of beer and brotherhood with some friends that still chew. This may never change or I might be able to be around those guys while drinking sometime down the road.

Okay, I'm rambling and its getting late AND I need to back up again at zero dark thirty.

Later fellers! Stay frosty
It sounds to me like you have a good grip on your quit Marcus...Congratulations. But I do have 2 comments. 1) DO NOT GET TOO COCKY/COMFORTABLE because that is when the bitch will give you a little reach around and convince you that JUST ONE is OK. Be Weary and stay on guard. 2) Do not give newbies the idea that they must give up all friends that use dip. I do think that it is GREAT INFORMATION to a newbie to stay far from alcohol and friends that dip for a while (BOOZE + Temptation = CAVE). However once you have some time into your quit and strengthened it a bit then its OK to be in that situation occasionally but be CAREFUL. I look forward to reading your HOF speech.

Souli, scowick, jmag, and nicofiend:

Thanks for the replies and what not. I appreicate any and all input on this stuff. If I get stupid or appear as though I am on the road to caving then (anybody) feel free to execute a little digital wall to wall counseling on me.

On a lighter note I actually get to watch some playoff basketball tonight. Actually glad there is some fresh blood in the conference finals this year. I was pulling for the Celtics as usual but its nice seeing younger teams get up and down the floor in the finals. That being said.....IS IT FOOTBALL SEASON YET?

Welcome Marcus. You can learn the activities again without dip but it may take time. In the last 4 months I've hardly played the xbox at all--good thing there haven't been any games I've really needed to play. That's about the only activity of all my other associations that seems totally different without a dip. Enough about me though, again welcome and nicely done so far on your quit.
Thanks jay. Gaming is certainly one of those activities that was always accompanied by a couple of cold beers and then a dip to "equalize" as a friend once put it. Probably stay away from it until its a non-issue. Thanks for the line and stay frosty!

Introduction
« on: May 18, 2011, 07:28:00 PM »
Howdy all. Thought I would pop in here and put up a short intro and the like.

My posting handle is KUmarcus01 and utilized NUmarcus11 last night on live chat. I have setup a live chat account that matches my log-in here on the boards (KUmarcus01). I only lay that out for clarification to a couple of the lads I chatted with last night. From here out you should always see the KUmarcus01 handle. Okay, now that I'm done with the "You know that I know that we know" shyte, y'all can just call me marcus or mark.

Well this is my first true attempt at quitting. Thought I was ready in March of 2009 but apparently not because as soon as I got my KTC U/N and P/W squared away I did absolutely nothing. Kep chewing for the last 2 years while attending graduate school and the desire to quit became the no shit "You are quitting" feeling this spring after a doctors checkup (not dentist). Fear seems to be the best motivator for stubborn people like me so I ordered some Smokey Mountain alternative chew to help fill the oral fixation/chew cravings and once it arrived I went cold turkey. So my last chew was Sunday, 15 May 2011 at 19:50 CDT. As I approach the 72 hour mark I feel pretty good. I've had a few cravings that felt like I might cave but last night I got on the live chat with some really great people and typed away until 04:00 or so. Had one craving today that was bad but I thought of that picture of the guy with half a face and that craving just disappeared.

Like a lot of you I'm sure I started chewing while I was in the military. Started out chewing Redman off and on and shifted to Skoal Straight in 2005. Chewed steadily from 2005 to now. The bitch will be doing all those activities that I used to do with chew without chew (fishing, hunting, target shooting, studying, gaming, tailgating etc.). However, I have seen here that the best way to proceed is to basically keep your mouth shut at first, account for yourself, and follow the lead/example set by those who have been successful and continue to mentor/lead.

Okay, this is getting long so I'll wrap up with interests: college football (GO BIG RED!), hunting, USMC, military history, GIS, emergency management, beer and hitting 100 days+.

If you want more details or just want to vent/chat whatever feel free to PM me. If I don't get to it right away or I don't get to roll call right away every day don't worry, I have weird hours owing to grad school/teaching responsibilities.
