I must say that some of the stuff on here is a little over the top but it does help people. I have had one bad day since quitting but I'm not gonna rub it in the face of the guy that is struggling.

The best advice I got from this Site is take what you need and leave. Easy as pie.

@redtrain14: well said... "we close doors." I appreciate that comment above all others. I'm not looking to close a door forever, just for the next 24 hours. Once I get into the habit of not dipping (which will happen in about 23 days) I'll be fine. Congratulations on 4 years.

The comment about "taken a break from nicotine" is also very insightful, thanks. But nicotine isn't like alcohol, it isn't nearly as damaging to me. I don't drink now but not because I'm afraid of becoming the person I used to be, I don't drink now because it wouldn't serve any purpose. I think nicotine will be harder to stay off long-term though, because I can do it anywhere and not bother anyone. I'm just going to stay off nicotine because it's not who I want to be anymore.

@wastepanel: "That's not how this place works bud." I'm not your bud, please don't patronize me. You have my permission to not click on this thread anymore, or to post another thread titled "stay away from mmcfreds, he's not one of us."

"...you have a price of flesh to pay." ...also don't be so dramatic.

"Post roll please." No. I haven't dipped since I logged into this site the first time, nor do I intend to.

"Why aren't you proud to put up your number?" Why should I be? You sound like the divemasters who tried to yell at me for not logging my dives. I told them to go screw themselves too, they were neither my boss nor my father. I completed over 300 dives while I was in Hawaii, never logged a single one, and never advanced beyond Rescue Diver. What difference does it make? I guarantee I'm more comfortable in the water than half the divemasters on the planet but if you need a cert-card to tell you I'm a good dive partner than I don't want you in the water with me anyway. If you need a guy that has been quit for years to give sound advice on how to stay that way then I don't want you in my... whatever... anyway. Everyone has something to teach me, including you.

If people don't like what I have to say, if they don't think it's going to help them stay off the dip, then those people shouldn't listen to me. I'm not dispensing advice on how to stay off the dip, nor am I pretending to be wise. But I've only tried to quit once and, thus far, have been successful.

@30yraddict: I came here to poke around a site that appeared to have something I wanted, which was a way to stay off the dip. At first I only found sarcastic, power-tripping jerks that think they have to abuse people to make them acknowledge that there is a problem. I got way too much of that in the Navy (the "mmc" in "mmcfreds) and don't have to tolerate any more of it now that I'm retired. There are bright spots of course but I don't think I'm going to make time in my day to find them or listen to what they have to say. If you want to email me in a month or year to find out if I'm dipping again I won't lie to you, there wouldn't be a purpose in it. I've used mmcfreds@yahoo.com for about 8 years and don't see any reason to change it.
Addiction is addiction regardless of substance. You obviously are not looking for accountability or you would be posting roll. Accountability is key.

We don't need some deck ape, anchor clanker who doesn't want to play by the rules using our forum as his personal bitchbox. Get with the program.

[ Hint: if you are still 'trying' you will not succeed ]

Drop the act and start posting roll or AMF. This ain't Facebook.

1. "I had my last dip at 11am this morning. It's now 11pm. I started tweaking around 3 and it's steadily gotten worse". Feb 3, 2012, 11:14 pm

2. "21 hours now. After a really good night's sleep I'm feeling much better this morning. Time for an extra cup of coffee and some gum. I predict this will be much easier than quitting drinking and quitting cigarettes". Feb 4, 2012, 7:57 am

3. "While the concepts discussed on this site no doubt work for most they are unnecessary for me. I'm just not that addicted to it". Feb 6, 2012, 11:38 am

4.”But nicotine isn't like alcohol, it isn't nearly as damaging to me. LOL. For a guy that is just not that addicted to it you sure have found your way to nicotine over the years. You used cigarettes then cigars then chew. You have other addictions as well. Who da thunk it? DonÂ’t pay attention to me, I have them also. I see you in the mirror.

Do you know how many folks come in here, lay their story down and talk about just how special they are? Unique? I would hazard to guess about once every two weeks. Go ahead, read the introductions. You will see yourself. A few of them changed their mental approach, adopted the program and quit. The majority just banter a bit and fade away. I predict that is you. Fade. They still lurk on site. That is the part that cracks me up. That is right Skyhook; you were on 3 days ago! You come on all the time. I bet you still use.

You are right, I think you got this. Most unique and special butterflies need just the right plan to make it work. That accompanied with the sense of entitlement that you deserve. While the rest of us go through the drudgery of posting a promise not use and supporting each other in that endeavor.

You are not a unique and special butterfly, you are a drug addict. Addict, addict, addict. Get your head straight and you will whip this. Otherwise, I just prefer you spread your drama to: “I have the full support of those at work and those at home”.

If you wanted something to help you quit, but only on your terms, head on over to your local VA - they have plenty of smoking/chewing cessation classes you can join...and lots of inexperienced, lowly residents, medical students and social workers you can impose your will upon...like some holier than thou Chief over a group of new SR...that's seamen recruits for the non-Navy...

First, congrats on your drink quit...but I have a couple of questions.

What methods did you use to quit cigarettes?

How long after quitting cigarettes did you pick up the tin?  Why?
Thanks!

I was on wellbutrin for 3 days when I quit smoking cigarettes. That product is awesome! It didn't curb the cravings as much as it did erase them completely. I just didn't feel the need to smoke, it was as if I had never smoked at all. After 3 days I just stopped taking it because I'm not a fan of meds of any kind (unless completely necessary).

I think I started smoking cigars about 3 years after my last cigarette. Casually at first (you can see this coming) but pretty soon I was smoking 3 cigars a day. I stopped smoking cigars after about a year of that because of the money (cold turkey) and about 3 weeks after that I asked a co-worker if he enjoyed dipping. That was in Georgia where you can get a 5-tin roll for $10 in some places. Very quickly I was off and running. It was sheer boredom at first, the plant I worked at was fully automated and we were just babysitters. Being an addict I went from zero to a tin a day in less than a week, even my friend said I was dipping more than he did.

I'm still doing fine, the cravings are gone and I'm chewing gum to control the oral fixation. I actually found a full tin in my sock drawer last night, what a shock that was. I put it on the bed and showed it to my girlfriend, then told her I was going to dump it on the front lawn and throw away the can. She laughed but understood why I wanted to dump it out. I did what I said I would and washed my hands afterward. I just can't be around it anymore, even the smell can set me off at this point. I should add that this is the first time I've actually tried to quit.

Oh, I appreciate all the kind words from those that gave them. I also appreciate the... ummm... less kind words from those that gave them. I believe that everyone has something to teach me, even if that something is what I don't want to be.
Just as a point of reference, you have quit cigs and cigars. Up to this point, you have only taken a break from nicotine.

We don't take breaks here, we close doors.

I closed my door 4 years ago on this very day.

You want accountability? You get out of this what you put in.....

Your call.
