I hear ya brother. I am on day 23 of my quit. I was pretty stressed out from work and lots of bad news plastered all over the news last night. (I am a consultant in the Oil and Gas Industry) I really wanted a Dip and a Stiff Drink. Luckily I did not partake in either.

This is the longest I have gone without a can of Cope in over 30yrs and I am not going to fail now.

Welcome to Day 2. It's gonna suck, but you can absolutely do this. The strength is already within you to be victorious one day at a time against your addiction. First thing's first: head on over to the April 2015 Quit Group (this is your group), post roll, and start consuming everything you possibly can on this site.

my name is Tony and my quit day was yesterday after 20 years of dipping. I didn't do it as much as i used to, I would go all day at work without and then have one at night. I have two young kids that would ask me why I put that stuff in my mouth and I didn't have a good answer. I figure now is as good a time as any. My fear is dealing witht he triggers i have that make me want a dip....drinking a beer, watching sports, being outside, fishing, hunting.....dear Lord give me the strength to get through this.

I've been dipping 6 years at a can a day...just flushed a full can down the toilet...read a lot on this site and it is very inspiring. I've tried quitting a few times and failed but this time will be different.

I want to quit because of them.

But I am not ready to. I will be totally honest, I love dipping. After filling my stomach with a fantastic meal, I put one in. On my way to work, I put one in. Before and after practice, I put one in. Watching TV, going on Facebook, you name it, I put one in. I go through about a can every other day ($5 in my area). I can't get enough of it.

I know the consequences of it and I know that one day I will quit this. But I want that day to come MUCH sooner than later, and I was hoping that you all could help with that. How did you all decide, figure out, or come to peace with quitting? Because currently, I am at a loss and not near a crossroads. I know I need to quit and I want to, but not now.

Unfortunately, none of us can say or do anything that will truly inspire you to quit. That has to come from within you.

You have to quit for you.

Not for your parents that are worried about the health and well-being of their son. Not for your younger brother that worries and cries about his "idol" today, but could very likely follow in your footsteps and pick the shit up himself tomorrow. Not for the girlfriend that you've been lying to for your entire relationship.

You need to quit for you, because it is you alone that will make the decision not to use each day.

My advice: Go get done. Do whatever it is you have to do, but go get done. Truly done. Done as in, you hate the shit and what it's done to you and your body. Done as in, you are disgusted with yourself for letting a weed rule your life and dictate your relationships (parents, brother, girlfriend). Done as in, you want your freedom back.

One final thing that I want you to know is that you are an addict with an addiction. Dipping isn't a habit, it's an addiction. You will be a nicotine addict for the rest of your life. When and if you ever decide to face your addiction, know that this is something you will never be cured of. Sure, it does get easier, but this is a fight you will fight for the rest of your life.

To answer your question: I've been here for 4 years, and I can't recall anyone posting anything about a "long term fog" the way you are describing.

On another note - you may not think you need help, but judging by the copious amount of addict speak in your post, you actually do. However, you have to be at the point where you are willing to have an open mind. Let me know if you would like us to point out some flaws in your thinking that might help you to be successful. There really is no shame in asking for help or support. That's what we do here.

Hey guys. Hope everyone is charging forward into the new year. I need some help from other quitters. I dipped for a can a day for 24 years ( roughly 8760 cans of snuff) and loved every minute of it. I quit on February 15, 2014. So almost a year into it and have never went back. Please don't congratulate me, I am not here for support and feel if you need some one to tell you can do it every 5 min then you need to grow up and realize why you are quitting ( insert pic of your kids). We (addicts) have a ton in common. One thing is our addictive personalities. As you've correctly pointed out, this tends to lead to overindulgance of one thing (alcohol / food) when putting down another thing (dip). It's become a sad running joke for me, but I'm still working on my "quit weight" 8 years after I've quit.

That said... recognizing that there's a potential issue there is the first step towards doing something about it.

We've got a couple of sub-groups here on the forums that can potentially help using the same methods that we use for dip (roll call):

Alcohol Quit Group - if you want to quit drinking all together

Alcohol Slow Down - I don't quit "get" this one, but I think it's for folks like you who are looking to "pump the brakes" a bit when it comes to drinking

I have posted on a similar string of thoughts before. Quitting nicotine and chew uncovers some more issues.
I did this and it might work for you, make yourself a couple goals:
1. no beers Monday - Thursday
2. instead of sitting on the couch, exercise and work up a sweat, the body will crave water and Gatorade instead of beer
3. when you usually drink beer, drink hot tea instead
4. on weekends don't let yourself over compensate, keep it slow, a couple beers and drink water beforehand
