Hey fellas,
I'm on day 9 here. I'm a hockey player and have been dipping for about 5-6 years now. I try quitting almost every summer but as soon as the season rolls around again I always find myself getting back into it. I don't think I ever wanted to truly quit before, just kind of hoped to kick the habit. It's always hard when teammates around me have a tin and ask if I want one. I've been doing pretty well so far, but I have had some troubles sleeping. I would tend to dip while watching tv right before going to bed, so could me quitting possibly be a reason for this? It's not that I have troubles falling asleep I just keep waking up after ~3-4 hours and can't back to bed. Any tips would be greatly appreciated, and if anyone else has experienced this just wondering when this symptom started to fade.
Really appreciate the site, keep on killing the can!
Welcome and congrats on deciding to quit!
Weird health issues associated with quitting are nearly universal. Everyone goes through some iteration of mouth/ jaw pain, sores, aches, fog, anxiety, etc. Sleep issues are extremely common as well. It's hard to say exactly when they subside, but the worst physical symptoms usually wane after a month or so.
The most important factor in sustained success is your outlook and fortitude. Essentially, why are you quitting? Do you feel like some outside pressure is making you do it, or do you desperately want to be free from your addiction. Right now, for yourself, for good?
If this is about some vague feeling that dipping is bad, or if you're doing it to please someone else, you're about guaranteed to fail. Sorry, but it just is what it is. However, if this is all about you and you are willing to make real life changes and sacrifices, you can quit successfully.
This site can help you do that. At KTC, we make a daily promise to stay nicotine free. We keep that promise and do it again the next day. One day at a time makes it manageable. Forever is overwhelming, so we focus on an achievable goal. If you really want to quit, go to the "quit group" page, find August 17 (Aug because that's when you'll be 100 days clean - it will make sense eventually) and post your day count and promise for today there.
With the tools available here, you can overcome any challenge or trigger - including hockey season.
Let me know if I can help.
